President Yoon Suk-yeol announcing the imposition of martial law in South Korea on December 3.
South Korea’s ruling party has hinted at impeaching President Yoon Suk-yeol. According to news agency AP, People’s Power Party General Secretary Han Dong-hun said that it is necessary to reduce the constitutional power of the President.
Dong-hun, leader of the ruling party People’s Power Party, said on Thursday – I have received information that the President tried to use the army to arrest many leaders during the imposition of martial law.
Dong-hun said that it is extremely important to reduce the power of the President otherwise he may take dangerous steps like imposing martial law again. This may pose a threat to the country and citizens.
Earlier, the ruling party had refused to impeach the President. Dong-hun said on Thursday that he would try to reject the impeachment motion. However, even then he had declared the President’s decision to impose martial law as unconstitutional. But now his statement is being seen as support for impeachment against the President.

President imposed martial law, lifted within 6 hours
President Yoon imposed martial law in South Korea on December 3. He accused the opposition party of being in collusion with North Korea and indulging in anti-national activities. However, it could last only for 6 hours because the opposition parties overturned it by voting in the Parliament.
Since then, opposition parties have been demanding resignation from President Yoon. 6 parties together have started the impeachment process to remove the President. Voting on this can take place on Saturday.

Will impeachment against the President be successful?
The very next day after the implementation of martial law in South Korea, the opposition parties together started the process of impeachment against the President. Opposition parties have a total of 192 MPs. In the 300-seat Korean Parliament, two-thirds, or 200, is required for impeachment.
People’s Party has 108 seats. Opposition parties need only 8 votes to proceed with impeachment. After the statement of ruling People’s Party General Secretary Dong-hun, it is believed that some opposition leaders of the party may support impeachment to remove the President.

Dong-hun was close to President Yoon, the relationship turned sour because of his wife
Dong-hun was previously considered close to President Yoon, as the two had worked together for many years in law practice. Dong-hun previously held the post of Law Minister in President Yoon’s government, but after becoming General Secretary of the People’s Party, their relationship has deteriorated significantly.
Dong-hun is said to be very angry about the scandals involving the President’s wife. He believes that this has had a negative impact on the party’s image.

The President’s wife has a long association with controversies. In 2021, he was accused of lying about professional records and cheating in his Ph.D thesis.
Why did martial law end in South Korea in just 6 hours?
After President Yole’s declaration of martial law, the entire opposition reached Parliament within a short time. There should be more than 150 MPs in the Parliament to remove the martial law law. By the time the army arrived to capture the Parliament, enough MPs had reached the Parliament and the proceedings had started.
However, the army tried to stop the proceedings. Many opposition MPs who were going to vote in Parliament were detained. Started breaking the windows of the Parliament to enter inside. But, by the time the soldiers reached inside, 190 out of 300 MPs of the National Assembly voted down the President’s martial law proposal.
According to the Constitution of South Korea, if the majority of MPs in the Parliament demand removal of martial law in the country, then the government will have to accept it. Opposition leaders took advantage of this provision of the Constitution and the army had to stop its operations.
The army immediately evacuated the Parliament and returned. There were helicopters above the Parliament and military tanks deployed on the road, they had to go back.

Why did President Yole need to impose martial law? There are a total of 300 seats in the Parliament of South Korea. In the elections held earlier this year, the public had given a huge mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People Power got only 108 seats, while the opposition party DPK got 170 seats. Due to being in majority, the opposition DPK was interfering more in the functioning of the presidential government, and they were not able to work according to their agenda.
President Yole won the election in 2022 by a slim margin. After this his popularity started declining. His image was also affected due to his wife being involved in many controversies. At present the popularity of the President is around 17%, which is the lowest among all the Presidents of the country. To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law.
