Voting is underway in the Parliament of South Korea on the impeachment brought to remove the President.
Voting has started in South Korea on impeachment to remove President Yoon Suk-yeol. On December 3, President Yoon imposed martial law in the country after accusing the opposition party of colluding with North Korea and engaging in anti-national activities.
Taking action against this, the opposition had brought an impeachment motion against him. 200 votes will be needed to remove President Yoon from office. Opposition parties have 192 MPs, which means they need 8 votes from the ruling party also.
However, before voting on impeachment on Saturday, 107 out of 108 MPs of the ruling party walked out of the House. Of these, 3 MPs have returned. On the other hand, the crowd outside the Parliament is raising slogans asking the ruling party MPs to return to the House.
According to the New York Times, the voting process in the House has been slowed down a bit. In fact, the Speaker hopes that some more MPs from the ruling party may return to vote against the President. Meanwhile, opposition leaders have said that if the impeachment motion fails today, they will present it again on Wednesday.
President bowed his head and apologized for martial law
Meanwhile, President Yoon Suk-yeol has apologized to the country for imposing martial law. He bowed his head on live TV and called the imposition of martial law in front of the public wrong. However he did not announce his resignation. While presenting his side he said-

If Yun steps down before the end of his five-year term in May 2027, the Constitution requires presidential elections to be held within 60 days.
If the impeachment motion is passed in Parliament, Yoon will be prosecuted in the court. Where the proposal will be proved by the vote of 6 out of 9 judges. At present, there are only 6 judges in the South Korean court, hence it is not clear whether this case will proceed without 7 judges or not.

Meanwhile, 190 MPs present in the country’s National Assembly unanimously overturned this decision, after which the President promised to remove martial law. Just 6 hours later (1 am), martial law was lifted in South Korea.

Why did President Yole need to impose martial law?
There are a total of 300 seats in the Parliament of South Korea. In the elections held earlier this year, the public had given a huge mandate to the opposition party DPK. The ruling People Power got only 108 seats, while the opposition party DPK got 170 seats. Due to being in majority, the opposition DPK was interfering more in the functioning of the presidential government, and they were not able to work as per their agenda.
President Yole won the election in 2022 by a slim margin. After this his popularity started declining. His image was also affected due to his wife being involved in many controversies. At present the popularity of the President is around 17%, which is the lowest among all the Presidents of the country. To deal with all this, the President imposed martial law.
President’s image suffered because of his wife

The President’s credibility was tarnished after he received a luxury brand bag as a gift from his wife and First Lady Kim Kyon. In fact, earlier this year, a YouTuber leaked a video in which the President’s wife was seen receiving an expensive gift from a priest. This video was filmed with a spy camera.
This bag was from Christian Dior company, whose price is said to be 2 lakh Indian rupees. He started being criticized in the country for taking such an expensive gift. In South Korea, it is illegal for any person holding public office (including family) to receive a gift worth more than 1 million Korean Won (60 thousand rupees).
After this, President Yoon had to apologize on national television. However, he refused to get it investigated.
