Yoon Suk Yeol took over as the President of South Korea in the year 2022.
In South Korea, on December 3 at 8:35 pm Indian time, President Yun Suk Yeol announced the imposition of emergency i.e. martial law. Protests started across the country in protest against this, under pressure from which the President said at around 1:30 in the night – the army has been called back. There will be a cabinet meeting soon, in which we will take a decision to lift the emergency.
The President had imposed emergency, accusing the main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and indulging in anti-national activities. After the announcement, the entire opposition reached the National Assembly within a short time. By the time the army arrived to capture the assembly, they started the Parliament proceedings. There were thousands of supporters of opposition parties outside.
The army started breaking the windows of the Parliament to enter inside. Many opposition MPs were detained. Helicopters and military tanks were deployed above the Parliament. But, by the time the soldiers reached inside, 190 out of 300 MPs of the National Assembly voted down the President’s martial law proposal.
The army halted the proceedings after Speaker Woo Won Sik’s announcement. However, the army said that military law will remain in force until the President declares its removal.

Reason for imposing martial law in South Korea…3 points
- This is the first time since 1980 that martial law has been declared in South Korea. Martial law has been imposed 16 times before 1980.
- Martial law has been imposed in the country at a time when there is disagreement between the government and the opposition party in Parliament regarding the budget bill.
- President Yoon’s People Power Party is in power through May 2022. The opposition Democratic Party is opposing the policies of the government.

Rallies banned after martial law, broadcast banned
- All political activities including meetings of the National Assembly, local councils and political parties, political associations, rallies and demonstrations will be banned.
- There will be a ban on fake news, public opinion and false propaganda.
- All media and publications will be under the control of the Martial Law Command.
- Action will be taken against strike and work stoppage.
- All medical personnel, including trainee doctors, who are on strike or have left the medical field, must return to their jobs within 48 hours. Will have to work honestly. Violators will be punished as per martial law.
