A boat bound for Turkey capsized a few kilometers from Northern Cyprus on Sunday.
A ferry boat carrying more than 270 passengers capsized on Sunday near the northern coast of the European country Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. According to AP, so far 6 people have died in the accident.
According to Turkey’s official TRT news channel, the accident occurred after the ferry started filling with water after reaching a few kilometers from the coast.
Northern Cyprus’ Transport Minister Erhan Ericli told TRT that relief and rescue teams had arrived at the scene. According to reports, many passengers are trapped on the capsized ship and waiting for rescue.

Coast Guard boats, civilian ships and ships of private companies are engaged in rescue operations on the spot. Ambulances have also been kept ready on the shore.
The ferry was going towards Turkey
The catamaran-style ferry was headed to Turkey’s Port Tasuku in Mersin province. It had departed from Kyrenia Port in Northern Cyprus.
A catamaran is a special type of boat or ferry. Its biggest identity is that it has two parallel parts (hull) at the bottom. This design helps in keeping it more stable in water.
But it is not completely safe from the danger of overturning. There may be a risk of it capsizing if operated incorrectly in extreme weather, strong winds and high waves. Excessive passenger or luggage load can also increase the risk.
The biggest problem is that if a catamaran capsizes, it can be more difficult to straighten it again than a normal ship.
Boat capsizing incidents are common in the Mediterranean
