The government has banned 156 fixed dose combination (FDC) drugs. These were commonly used as painkillers, multi-vitamins and antibiotics apart from fever and cold.
The government said that their use could pose a threat to humans. Therefore, the production, consumption and distribution of these drugs will be banned across the country.
The government has issued this order on the recommendations of the Drugs Technical Advisory Board. The board said in its report that there is no medical justification for the ingredients present in these FDC medicines.
Medicines made by mixing more than one drug in a single pill are called fixed dose combination drugs (FDC), these drugs are also known as cocktail drugs.
Hair treatment, skincare and anti-allergic medicines also included
According to the order issued by the central government, the use of amylase, protease, glucoamylase, pectinase, alpha galactosidase, lactase, beta-gluconase, cellulase, lipase, bromelain, xylanase, hemicellulase, malt diastase, invertase and papain is likely to pose a risk to humans.
The list of banned medicines also includes medicines used for hair treatment, antiparasitic, skincare, anti-allergic. The government said that alternatives to these medicines are available in the market. There will be no ban on them.
Paracetamol 125mg tablet also banned
According to the notification issued by the Health Ministry, among the banned drugs, ‘Aceclofenac 50mg + Paracetamol 125mg Tablet’ has been banned. And the combination of paracetamol, tramadol, taurine and caffeine has also been banned. Tramadol is an opioid-based painkiller.
These FDC medicines are also banned
- Mefenamic Acid + Paracetamol Injection,
- Cetirizine HCL + Paracetamol + Phenylephrine HCL,
- Levocetirizine + Phenylephrine HCL + Paracetamol,
- Paracetamol + Chlorpheniramine Maleate + Phenyl Propanolamine and
- Camylofin Dihydrochloride 25mg + Paracetamol 300mg
IPA Secretary General said this is the right step in the interest of patients
The Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance has supported this decision of the government. IPA Secretary General Sudarshan Jain said that this has been going on for many years. This is a right step in the interest of patients and all aspects have been taken into consideration.
Jain said that the government had also given an opportunity to the manufacturers of these drugs to present their side. Therefore, the correct products will continue and when there is no data to support these drugs, the companies will have to withdraw them.
