The government spent about Rs 16 lakh crore on the highway network in the last 12 years, but there was not much improvement in the speed of vehicles. S
According to data presented in Parliament by the Ministry of Transport and Highways and the logistics report of NITI Aayog, the average speed of cars on the National Highway in 2014 was 45 km/hour.
In 2026 it is between 52 to 58 km/h. That means the maximum speed increased only by 13 km/hour. The average speed of trucks has increased by only 2 km/hour. Only about 10 minutes are saved by car in a journey of 100 km. More than one crore trees were also cut in 12 years for this construction. If state highways are added the number is more than 1.5 crore.
Why couldn’t the speed increase?
- Illegal Cut-Encroachment: There are illegal cuts or shops every two km on the National-State Highway. The risk of traffic jams and accidents increases as soon as you get off the expressway.
- Bypass Design: Many bypasses built outside cities connect local traffic. This affects the speed of vehicle movement on the highway.
- Focus on 0.1%: A large budget was spent on expressways with limited traffic. 97% people use normal highways. They did not get any attention.
Foreign models and Indian roads
Fast pace abroad: In developed countries, vehicles travel faster than 100 km/hr on highways, whereas in India it is only 50-60 km/hr.
Closed and safe roads: Highways in foreign countries are completely covered, so that local vehicles, animals or pedestrians cannot come in between.
Correct structure of the road: On foreign roads, the turns, slopes and handling are so precise that the vehicles remain safe even at high speed.
