Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina said that Bangladesh suffered loss due to Prime Minister Tariq Rahman not attending the BRICS summit.
Hasina said in an interview to PTI on Wednesday that due to Rahman’s decision, Bangladesh also lost the opportunity to improve relations with India.
BRICS summit was held in New Delhi on 12-13 September. India had invited Rahman to come to the summit, but he did not arrive.
Hasina said that if Tariq Rehman did not come to India because of his stay in India, then it would be a matter of sadness. Relations between two countries should not be decided on the basis of any individual or political differences.

The then PM of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina had come for a bilateral meeting with PM Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on 22 June 2024.
Hasina raised questions on Rahman’s decision
Hasina said that BRICS is not just a meeting of leaders. It includes the world’s major economies. By joining the summit, Bangladesh could learn from other countries. But the government missed this opportunity.
He said that a responsible government should open new avenues for the country and not close them.
Mentioned about Ziaur Rahman’s old visit to India
Hasina also mentioned the visit of then Bangladesh President Ziaur Rahman to India in 1979. At that time Hasina was living in Delhi.
He told that on August 15, 1975, his father and founder of Bangladesh Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and many family members were assassinated. After this, on November 3, four big leaders were also murdered in Dhaka’s Central Jail. Hasina alleged that Ziaur Rehman had come to power wrongly.
Haseena said,
When Ziaur Rehman came to Delhi in 1979, I was also living there. When he went to London in 1980, I was also in London. But my presence did not stop him from visiting any city. When Ziaur Rehman did not face any problem at that time, then what problem does his son Tariq have in coming to India today?

Hasina said- Bangladesh is going through a serious crisis
Hasina claimed that Bangladesh is going through a big crisis at this time. He alleged that democracy has weakened in the country and opposition parties are not getting opportunities to express their views.
- The judiciary is being used to target political opponents.
- Media freedom has diminished and law and order has deteriorated.
- Minorities are feeling insecure and fundamentalist forces have got a chance to grow again.
Hasina wants to return to Bangladesh and restore democracy
Hasina did not give any date for her return to Bangladesh. But she said that she wants to return to the country and join the fight to restore democracy.
He said that the people of Bangladesh should get a chance to choose the government of their choice in free and fair elections. According to Hasina, her return will be an important step in this direction.
No fear of returning to Bangladesh despite death sentence
During the interview, Hasina admitted that returning to Bangladesh could be risky for her. The court there has sentenced him to death. Despite this she said that she would not retreat out of fear.
He mentioned the murder of his father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, mother, brothers and several family members in 1975. Hasina said she returned to Bangladesh in 1981 despite military rule and threats. He also mentioned the grenade attack on August 21, 2004 and other attacks on him.
Hasina said that she also had to face jail and political harassment. He said that his biggest concern today is not his own safety, but the situation of the justice system in Bangladesh.
He described the death penalty as an act of political vendetta. He says that sentencing a person without giving him a chance to present his side is not justice.
78-year-old Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in August 2024 after a major movement against the government. After this she left Bangladesh and came to India. She has been living here since then.
