Shubhanshu is a fighter pilot and combat leader. He has over 2000 hours of flying experience.
India has selected its prime astronaut for the Indo-US Space Mission. Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla will be the prime astronaut of this mission. ISRO said on Friday, August 2 that Captain Prashant Nair has also been selected for this mission. He will be a part of this mission as a backup.
The date of when Shubhanshu will go to the International Space Station (ISS) has not been announced yet. However, the training of both will start from the first week of this month. ISRO said that the Human Space Flight Center (HSFC) has signed a Space Flight Agreement (SFA) with US-based Axiom Space for its upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the ISS.

ISRO said that the National Mission Assignment Board has selected Shubhanshu and Prashant. Earlier 4 names were given for this. This agreement will help India to complete its upcoming Gaganyaan mission.

Shubhanshu is a fighter pilot and combat leader. He has over 2000 hours of flying experience. He has so far flown aircraft like Sukhoi-30MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and AN-32.
He was born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Shubhanshu is also an alumnus of the National Defense Academy. He was commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 17 June 2006.
