Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday informed about the delimitation and increase in Lok Sabha seats in the Lok Sabha.
During the discussion on amendment bills related to women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday explained that delimitation will not harm any state. He told how the Lok Sabha seats will be from 543 to 850.
In fact, during the discussion, the opposition was alleging that delimitation would benefit the northern states, while the southern states would be left behind due to the difference in population growth over decades. Congress said that these bills are not for women’s reservation but for delimitation through backdoors.

Shah told- where did the figure of 850 come from?
Shah said, ‘Let me explain. Suppose there are 100 seats and 33% reservation is to be given for women. If the total seats are increased by 50%, it becomes 150. And when 33% reservation of 150 is applied, it equates to approximately 100 seats.’
‘Currently there are 543 members. This will be increased by 50% and when 33% seats are reserved for women, then all 543 seats will become such where women can also contest elections. That’s how the idea of 50% increase came. 850 is a round figure, the actual number would be 816.’
Tamil Nadu seats will increase from 39 to 59.
The total Lok Sabha seats of the five southern states will increase from 129 to 195. His percentage will increase from 23.76 to 23.87. Thus, with the proposed 50% seat increase, every state in South India will get more seats.
Tamil Nadu will get 20, Kerala 10, Telangana 9 and Andhra Pradesh 13 additional seats. Maharashtra, the state with the second highest number of MPs in the Lok Sabha after Uttar Pradesh, will get 24 additional seats.

Shah said – no change in delimitation law
Shah said that the Delimitation Commission law is completely based on the existing law. There is no change in this. This will not have any impact on the ongoing elections.
According to the Delimitation Bill:
- The total number of seats will be increased.
- The boundaries of the constituencies will be redrawn on the basis of the 2011 census.
Through these bills, 7 articles of the Constitution – 55, 81, 82, 170, 330, 332 and 334 (A) will be amended.

Statements of 4 opposition leaders in Parliament
- Priyanka Gandhi: Why are they not giving 33% reservation to women out of 543? If there is no fear of losing the position then some people may lose their position in this. So that women and OBC category can come. Do this today itself, auspicious work will be done and black tilak will also be useful.
- Asaduddin Owaisi: States which have more population will get more seats and the seats of states with less population will decrease. The southern states contribute about 30% of the country’s GDP and 21% of the total tax revenue, but they are being ‘punished’ for their good governance.
- Akhilesh Yadav: These people do not want to give their rights to 33% women of backward class. When the turn came for delimitation, these people made a complete strategy as to how the areas should be created so that only these people get the benefit from it.
- T R Baalu (DMK MP): All three delimitation amendment bills are sandwich bills, we oppose them. We showed black flags.
