Matka King is based on its powerful story and the backdrop of the 60-70s. In this series, an attempt has been made to show the game of identity, respect and power through the world of gambling. Meanwhile, Dainik Bhaskar had a special conversation with the film’s director Nagraj Manjule and starcast Vijay Verma, Kritika Kamra and Sai Tamhankar. During this, everyone not only talked openly about their characters, but also shared interesting things about the story of the series, its era and its social aspects. This series is not just about a game, but is an attempt to bring forward the story of that period and the people associated with it. Nagraj Manjule- You always show the society in a raw and unfiltered manner. What have you explored in Matka King? This story is not just about the game of gambling, but about the world that is built around it. We know that Matka was played, but less is known about the life of the people who played it. How did this game become so big and attractive? We have tried to tell the story of that society, that era and those people. How challenging was it to bring the 60s-70s era alive on screen and how was your experience working with such a strong star cast? Nagraj Manjule- It is more difficult to think first. Once you write that phase, the entire team gets involved in making it come true. We had extremely talented people in departments like costume, production design, music and DOP, who together tried to bring that time to life. The experience of working with Starcast was wonderful, for the first time I worked with such big and renowned artists. Every character is strong, it seems as if every player is a match-winner in his own right. What was so special about the script and what was there about your character that made you immediately say yes to this project and how much could you relate to it? Vijay Verma- The biggest reason was the opportunity to work with Nagraj Manjule. I have always been a fan of his work, and working with him is a special experience in itself. The character in the script has a quiet but deep intensity. He does his work with complete sincerity, but the society of which he is a part does not openly accept him, this is his biggest struggle. As far as relating is concerned, it was an ongoing process; sometimes I felt very close to the character, and sometimes distant from him. Many times it happened that both of us met somewhere in the middle, and from there the path to understanding that character was made. In the trailer, there is a complexity and many layers in your character’s relationships, what would you like to say about this? Kritika Kamra- All the characters and their relationships in this story are complex. My character Gulrukh Dubash comes from a different world, but he is attracted to this game and the world of Vijay’s character. He has his own shortcomings and desires, which make him a part of this journey. How many layers will be seen in your character? Sai Tamhankar- There are many layers. My character ‘Barkha’ is such that she cannot suppress her emotions. If she feels something, it’s important to express it. This is his biggest specialty. Nowadays, female characters are getting more depth in OTT and cinema. Your opinion on this? Sai Tamhankar- This is a very good change. Now female characters are not just decoration, but an important part of the story. However, there is still scope for improvement. There is a line in the trailer ‘Life depends on hope’. What does hope mean in your life? Nagraj Manjule- Just keep moving. The hope is that things will get better in future. Vijay Verma- Only hope helps in difficult times. Times always change, and this faith keeps us moving forward. Kritika Kamra- Hope is the feeling that keeps us alive. If not hope, nothing. Sai Tamhankar- Hope is the driving force of life. It is difficult to live without it. The last question the audience wants to know is how long is Vijay Verma going to remain single? Vijay Verma- The world rests on hope… At the moment hope is petrol!
