New York Mayor Zoharan Mamdani has said he is considering the legal possibility of arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is visiting the city for the United Nations General Assembly in September. He said that talks are going on with the city law department in this matter.
Mamdani said that they will do only what the law allows. He reiterated that according to him, Netanyahu’s place is in The Hague, where those accused of international crimes are tried.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued an arrest warrant against Netanyahu in November 2024 on charges of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Mamdani said in the New York Times podcast The Interview that Netanyahu is accused of war crimes and many people believe the same.
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, accused Mamdani of fostering an anti-Semitic environment. He said that instead of confronting growing anti-Semitism, Mamdani is creating an atmosphere against Israel.
Danon confirmed that Netanyahu will address the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week from September 22 to 28. He said that the mayor’s stance will not make any difference. He wrote on X that if anyone should be arrested it is New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In a recent radio interview, Netanyahu said that he was not concerned about threats regarding Mamdani’s arrest. He alleged that the Mayor of New York supports Hamas and hates America.
Both America and Israel are not members of ICC. US federal law prevents state and local authorities from cooperating with ICC requests. Last year, New York Governor Kathy Hochul had also said that the mayor does not have the authority to arrest Netanyahu.

The air in Toronto, New York and Washington is the worst in the world due to forest fires in Canada.
The smoke from the massive forest fire in Canada has reached America. On Saturday, Toronto, New York and Washington DC were among the most polluted cities in the world. In view of the poor air quality, the local administration has advised people to go out less and be careful.
Currently, there are forest fires at 955 places in Canada. Nearly 200 of these fires are in the province of Ontario alone. Fire is still out of control in many places.
More than a dozen forests are on fire on the northern border of the US state of Minnesota. It is spread over an area of more than 73 thousand acres. Officials have declared an emergency, calling it an unprecedented situation.
According to the US National Interagency Fire Center and Natural Resources Canada, the fire spread rapidly due to persistently hot weather and below normal rainfall in late June.
Satellite images showed winds carried the smoke from Ontario to Toronto, New York state and Boston. According to air quality monitoring organization IQAir, Toronto, New York and Washington DC were the most polluted cities in the world on Saturday.
US President Donald Trump on Friday accused Canada of negligence in preventing forest fires. He said that the smoke is causing huge losses to America and to compensate for this, imposing new tariffs on Canada can be considered.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called the criticism from American leaders wrong. He also reminded that Toronto had helped America in extinguishing the fires in California last year.
Experts say it is not right to blame Canada alone for forest fire smoke. According to University of Toronto expert Patrick James, smoke knows no boundaries. Wherever the wind takes him, he goes there. In the past too, smoke from major fires in America has reached Canada.
Taiwanese President said – will never allow democratic Taiwan to become ‘China’s Taiwan’
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said on Sunday that the country must remain united to protect its democratic system and that ‘democratic Taiwan’ should not be allowed to become ‘China’s Taiwan’ at any cost. He appealed to the leaders and workers of his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to jointly combat Beijing’s “Red Terror”.
Addressing the DPP’s annual conference, Lai said Taiwan needed to remain vigilant even in times of peace.
Lai said China’s new ‘Ethnic Unity Law’ also gives Beijing the basis to take action against people living outside its borders. Taiwan fears that this law could be used against Taiwanese citizens whom China considers separatists.
However, China has already rejected all the criticisms made regarding this law. Taiwan says that China’s legal system has no authority over its territory.
Delivering a speech in Taiwanese (Hokkien) language, Lai called on party leaders to be at the forefront of confronting the threat of China’s “Red Terror” to society.
He said, “We must work together to protect our democratic and independent way of life. Under no circumstances will we allow democratic Taiwan to become China’s Taiwan again.”
Lai once again said that Taiwan is already an independent country, whose constitutional name is ‘Republic of China’. He said that it is not under the ‘People’s Republic of China’.
Lai said that in the past decade, the DPP government has never chosen to retreat in the face of China’s increasing pressure, propaganda, military threats and diplomatic pressure.
