America’s immigration agency ICE has arrested Bruna Caroline Ferreira, the mother of the nephew of White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt. According to media reports, he may soon be sent back to Brazil.
The matter came to light when ICE officials caught him from Massachusetts and sent him to a detention center in Louisiana.
The US Department of Homeland Security says that Bruna came to America on a tourist visa, but her visa expired in 1999. They allege that Bruna crossed the time limit of her visa and action has been taken against her on suspicion of assault.
Bruna’s lawyer Todd Pomerleau does not completely agree with these things. He says that there is no criminal case against Bruna. She was living in the United States legally under a government program called DACA, which protects people who came to America as children.
The lawyer also says that Bruna was in the process of getting a green card and due to her sudden arrest, her young child was also separated from her.
Bruna’s 11-year-old son is being raised by his father Michael Levitt, who is Caroline Levitt’s brother. Michael said that his biggest concern is his son’s safety and his privacy.
The Trump administration has started enforcing immigration laws very strictly this year. The government says that those who are living in America without permission can be deported from the country.
