71-year-old Buddhist monk arrested for raping a minor in Sri Lanka; Girl’s mother also in custody

Senior Sri Lankan Buddhist monk Pallegama Hemarathana Thero has been arrested for alleged rape and sexual exploitation of a minor girl. The 71-year-old monk was taken into custody from a private hospital in Colombo.
Hemarthana Thero is the chief protector of the eight sacred Buddhist sites of Sri Lanka. He is also the chief priest of Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to reports, he is also the guardian of the sacred tree which is believed to have grown from the branch of the Bodhi tree where Buddha attained enlightenment.
According to local media, the victim is now 15 years old. In March, while investigating a case involving the alleged abduction and illegal detention of a minor, police came across sexual abuse over a long period of time. After this the girl was kept in a government protection centre.
According to reports, the girl’s mother has also been arrested. He is accused of helping in exploitation and hiding the matter.
The monk is accused of raping and sexually assaulting the girl multiple times in a temple in Anuradhapura in 2022. The court has sent him to judicial custody. At present he is kept under medical observation at the Colombo Prison Hospital.
Child protection officials had earlier criticized the police for not arresting the accused despite his name being revealed. Later the Chief Magistrate of Anuradhapura ordered the monk to be detained until the investigation is completed.
