US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a 25% extra tariff on medium and heavy trucks. This will be applicable from 1 November. Earlier this fee was about to come into effect from 1 October, but now it has been postponed for a month.
Trump wrote on his Truth social account, “From 1 November 2025, all medium and heavy vehicle trucks coming to America from other countries will be charged 25%.” Most trucks in the US come from neighboring countries Canada and Mexico, where there is already a trade agreement.
According to the US Department of Commerce, last year the US bought 2 lakh 45 thousand 764 medium and heavy vehicle trucks, most of which came from Canada and Mexico. Their total price was 201 billion dollars, contributing $ 45 billion from Canada and $ 156 billion from Mexico.
In the US automobile market, these trucks are only 5% of the total vehicles. But according to the report of S&P Global, only about 80% of their demand in North America meets America.
These trucks are divided on the basis of weight. The medium truck weighs between 14,000 and 33,000 pounds, while weighing more than 33,000 pounds is called heavy trucks. In the US, they are mainly used for logistics (freight), construction work and waste management.
