Eight people, including Li Yingqiang, a leader running an underground church in China’s Sichuan state, have been detained. Along with Li, his wife and priest Dai Zichao were also captured. Formal charges (chargesheet) have not been made public yet.
No religious activity is allowed in China without government approval. Churches that operate without government approval are based in homes, flats or private spaces, where people pray in small groups. That is why they are called underground churches.
In China, any church, mosque or temple can operate openly only if it is registered with the government and follows the rules of the Chinese Communist Party. According to the English newspaper ‘The Guardian’, China had banned online sermons by unlicensed religious groups in September 2025.
Also in October 2025, 18 members of a church were arrested in China. A report released in December by China-based Human Rights Watch said that about 100 members of the underground church have been detained so far in Zhejiang state alone.
America’s House Select Committee on China says that the church was targeted because it refused to bow before the Chinese Communist Party.
