The trial has started in Canada in the murder case of an elderly couple Arnold de Jong and Joan de Jong about three years ago. In this, two charges each have been leveled against three youths of Indian origin, Gurkaran Singh, Abhijeet Singh and Khushveer Singh Tour.
All three accused have declared themselves innocent. According to police, Arnold and Joanne were found dead in their Abbotsford home on May 9, 2022. The couple had organized a family function a day before the incident.
When his son-in-law reached home the next morning, the couple’s bodies were found there. Prosecution lawyer Dorothy Tsui told the court that the accused’s motives behind the murder were debt, financial crisis and greed.
The prosecution says Abhijeet Singh, who ran a cleaning business, did cleaning work at the de Jong couple’s house in July 2021 and April 2022.
Gurkaran Singh came to Canada on a student visa on April 16, 2022, i.e. just three weeks before the murder. Soon after the murder, Gurkaran Singh and Khushveer Singh Toor deposited two checks worth $3,601 into their bank accounts. These checks were signed by Joan de Jong and it was written that the amount was for cleaning service.
According to the police report, Arnold was found in a room with his hands and legs tied with rope and tape wrapped around his head, completely covering his nose and mouth. Joan was found lying on her back in another room, with blood around her head and neck.
According to the pathologist’s report, Arnold died of asphyxiation, while Joan died of her injuries.
