America has filed a case against former Cuban President Raul Castro for shooting down two planes and killing four people in 1996. The US Justice Department said that this action has been taken in the case of murder of American citizens.
On Wednesday, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche in Miami announced charges against Raul Castro and five other people.
The case states that in 1996, two planes belonging to the Brothers to the Rescue group were downed between Cuba and Florida. Four people were killed in this incident, including three American citizens.
At that time Raul Castro was the chief of the Cuban Army. The US has accused him of conspiracy to murder American citizens, destroying an aircraft and four counts of murder.
According to US officials, murder charges could carry the death penalty or life imprisonment. “America and President Trump will not forget its citizens,” Todd Blanche said.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel called these allegations a political conspiracy. He said that this case is an attempt to justify military action on Cuba. Diaz-Canel claimed that Cuba had acted in self-defense at the time.
According to the report, America is continuously increasing political and economic pressure on Cuba. In recent years, the US imposed new sanctions on Cuba and also put pressure on oil supplies, which increased problems like power crisis and food shortage there.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also recently blamed Cuba’s military-run company GAESA for the country’s crisis. However, experts believe that the chances of 94-year-old Raul Castro coming to America and appearing in court are very less.

America lifts sanctions on UN expert Francesca Albanese
The US has removed UN expert Francesca Albanese from the list of sanctioned persons. This information appeared on the website of the US Treasury Department on May 20. The decision comes a week after a federal court order temporarily halted the Trump administration’s sanctions.
Francesca Albanese is an Italian lawyer and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories. He recommended the International Criminal Court (ICC) investigate and prosecute alleged war crimes against Israeli and American civilians. In a report, he also accused several American companies of supporting Israel’s “ongoing genocidal campaign” in Gaza.
The US had imposed sanctions on Albanese in July 2025. The US administration said that she was inciting the ICC to take action against American and Israeli officials, companies and officials. Under these sanctions, he was banned from entering America and using banking services.
Albanese’s husband and their US citizen daughter then filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration in February. US District Judge Richard Lyons of Washington ruled on May 13 that despite Albanese living outside the US, he is protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution. The judge said the administration tried to control his “ideas and message.”
After the court order, the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had said that the sanctions will not be implemented until the order remains in effect. Now his name has also been removed from the website of the US Treasury Department. The US State Department and the White House have not yet responded to this matter.
