A powerful earthquake of 6.3 magnitude occurred in the northern area of Afghanistan early Monday morning. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, about 28 kilometers below the ground. Mazar-i-Sharif is the capital of Balkh province and one of the largest cities in Afghanistan.
Governor’s spokesperson Haji Zaid said that at least 4 deaths have been confirmed so far. Many people are injured and houses and buildings have been damaged at many places. According to USGS estimates, the death toll could rise to hundreds.
Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said the ground shook strongly in several provinces at around 1 am. Earthquake tremors were also felt in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
The famous Blue Mosque of Mazar-e-Sharif was also damaged. In the video viral on social media, the outside part of the mosque was seen broken and scattered on the ground.
