The third meeting of the Joint Parliamentary Committee was held on Thursday (5 September) to amend the Wakf Bill. In this, officials of the ministries gave a presentation to the committee about the Wakf Bill. During this, there was a heated debate between the officials and the opposition MPs.
Apart from this, there was a debate between BJP MPs and opposition MPs. According to media reports, there was also a ruckus in the meeting. Opposition MPs alleged that during the presentation, government officials were not giving complete information about the bill to the committee.
He also said that the ministry officials are not adopting their independent view. They are promoting the government’s stand without any discussion. According to sources, the most opposition came from AAP MP Sanjay Singh and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee.
In fact, Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the Waqf Bill 2024 in the Lok Sabha on August 8. Opposition parties including the Congress and the Samajwadi Party had termed this bill as anti-Muslim. Amidst opposition from the opposition, this bill was sent to the JPC without any discussion in the Lok Sabha.

- Urban Affairs and Road Transport Secretary Anurag Jain, Railway Board Chairman Satish Gautam, Railway Board Member (Infrastructure) Anil Kumar Khandelwal made a presentation before the JPC on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
- Officials of the Ministry of Urban Affairs informed the panel about the land acquisition process of the British government for the construction of Delhi in 1911. During this, opposition MPs asked some questions to the officials.
- DMK MP A Raja said- Wakf Act was passed in 1913. Why is this not mentioned in this presentation of the Ministry of Urban Affairs. After this, there was a heated debate between the MPs and the officials.
- The officials were not able to answer some questions. The MPs said that the officials were giving incomplete information. Committee chairman and BJP MP Jagdambika Pal intervened and stopped the uproar.
- Officials further said that the Waqf Board had claimed 138 properties between 1970 and 1977. These properties were acquired by the British government for the construction of New Delhi.
- A total of 341 square kilometres of land was acquired in the National Capital Region. Compensation was also given to the people affected by this. This claim of the government was also opposed by opposition MPs.
- The ministries said that the Waqf Amendment Bill will help them to complete the development projects faster by removing encroachment on government land. The opposition said that there is a provision regarding encroachment in the existing laws.
- Opposition MPs said in the meeting- The government does not want anyone to question it on the land acquired by the government. For this, the government will talk about encroachment and development projects.

In the second meeting of the JPC, opposition members walked out of the meeting for some time. This meeting lasted for about 8 hours and heard the views of All India Sunni Jamiatul Ulema and Indian Muslims for Civil Rights, Rajasthan Muslim Waqf, Delhi and UP Sunni Waqf Board.
According to sources, Muslim organizations said that many provisions of the bill are a matter of concern for Muslims. ‘Waqf by Users’ was discussed the most in the meeting.
