The Government of India has appointed Lieutenant General (Retd.) NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of the country. He will also hold the responsibility of Secretary, Department of Defense Affairs. The tenure of current CDS Anil Chauhan is ending on May 30. NS Raja Subramani will be the third CDS of the country. Subramani is currently the Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). He retired from the post of Vice Chief of Army Staff on 31 July 2025. NS Raja Subramani joined Garhwal Rifles in 1985. He took commission in the Army from Garhwal Rifles in December 1985. He received military training from the National Defense Academy (NDA). After this he also went to the Joint Services Command and Staff College, Bracknell, Britain. After returning to India, he was given the responsibility of Brigade Major in the Mountain Brigade. Later he studied from National Defense College, Delhi. He also holds a Master of Arts degree from King’s College London and an MPhil degree in Defense Studies from Madras University. Subramani, who handled responsibilities from Jammu and Kashmir to Kazakhstan, worked in different operational fields in his military career spanning more than 35 years. He has also handled military related matters in the Indian Embassy in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. In the rank of Colonel, he held the responsibility of Assistant Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters. Later he was Colonel General Staff (Operations) in Eastern Command. He was also the Deputy Commander of Rashtriya Rifles Sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Subramani has also been the head of Samba Brigade. After becoming Brigadier, Subramani took command of 168 Infantry Brigade in Samba, Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, he was also the Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence (DDGMI) at Army Headquarters. In the year 2023, he took over the post of General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Central Command. A year later, he became the 47th Vice Chief of Army Staff. After retirement, he was appointed Military Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS). NS Raja Subramani has been awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal for his services to the country. Apart from Subramani, Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Navy Chief. He is currently the Western Navy Commander in Mumbai. Krishna will also take charge on May 31.
