The Indian High Commission has expressed displeasure over the incident. The High Commission has said that it is not just tampering with the statue, there is also an attack on Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence and peaceful views.

The High Commission said that the incident was reported to the local authorities. After this, the British officer reached the spot. The local police is investigating the incident.

This statue of Gandhi was made in 1968

This statue of Gandhi was built in 1968. It was created by the famous Polish-Indian sculptor Freda Brilliant. The bronze statue has been installed at the Garden Tavistock Square near University College London (UCL).

Gandhi was a law student in the UCL during 1888–1891. This statue was built to pay tribute to his time spent in London and his global heritage.

It depicts Gandhiji sitting in his traditional dhoti, which shows his simplicity and philosophy of non -violence.

Freda designed the statue with Gandhi’s personality and his peaceful nature.

Every year on October 2, ceremonies are held near this statue on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. This includes flowering, bhajan singing and memory meetings.
