The incident of offering objectionable slogans on Mahatma Gandhi’s statue at Tavistock Square, London, came to light on Monday. The miscreants wrote terrorists to Gandhi, Modi and Indians with paint on the statue.
The Indian High Commission has expressed displeasure over the incident. The High Commission has said that it is not just tampering with the statue, there is also an attack on Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violence and peaceful views.
The High Commission said that the incident was reported to the local authorities. After this, the British officer reached the spot. The local police is investigating the incident.
The High Commission said in the statement,
This embarrassing incident took place three days before International Non -Violence Day and is being taken seriously. We are ensuring the repair and safety of the statue in association with the local administration.
In June this year, the Indian delegation visited Britain. During this time the members paid tribute to the Gandhi statue.
This statue of Gandhi was made in 1968
This statue of Gandhi was built in 1968. It was created by the famous Polish-Indian sculptor Freda Brilliant. The bronze statue has been installed at the Garden Tavistock Square near University College London (UCL).
Gandhi was a law student in the UCL during 1888–1891. This statue was built to pay tribute to his time spent in London and his global heritage.
It depicts Gandhiji sitting in his traditional dhoti, which shows his simplicity and philosophy of non -violence.
Freda designed the statue with Gandhi’s personality and his peaceful nature.
Every year on October 2, ceremonies are held near this statue on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti. This includes flowering, bhajan singing and memory meetings.
Jaishankar’s car was surrounded by Khalistanis in March
Khalistan supporters in London surrounded the car of External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar.
In March this year, India’s Foreign Minister S.K. Jaishankar visited Britain. During this time, Khalistani protesters surrounded their car near Chhatham House and demonstrated. The protesters raised slogans with flags and speakers.
After that demonstration, India strongly condemned the incident. A spokesman for the Ministry of External Affairs had said that India condemns the misuse of democratic freedom and hopes that the host country should fulfill its diplomatic duties in such matters.
External Affairs Minister Jaishankar also met Britain’s Prime Minister Kir Stmper, Foreign Secretary David Lammi and other senior leaders during his visit.
