US President Donald Trump has approved a bill related to tough sanctions against Russia. According to the Economic Times, this bill has a provision to impose up to 500% tariff on countries purchasing oil from Russia, especially India, China and Brazil.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he met Trump at the White House on Wednesday, in which the President gave the green signal to the bill. This bill was being prepared for the last several months. It can be brought for voting in Parliament next week.
The name of this bill is ‘Sanctioning of Russia Act 2025’. Its purpose is to put pressure on those countries which are buying cheap crude oil from Russia amid the Ukraine war. America alleges that this is helping Russia fight the war.

The bill related to new sanctions against Russia has received support from lawmakers from both Republican and Democrat parties.
Already 25% tariff on India due to Russian oil
America has already imposed 25% extra tariff on the purchase of Russian oil. If this bill is passed, it may bring new problems for Delhi. Till now a total of 50% tariff has been imposed on India.
Due to this, India is facing difficulties in selling its goods in America, which is affecting India’s exports. Talks are also going on on a trade deal to settle the tariff dispute between the two countries.
India wants the total 50% tariff imposed on it to be reduced to 15% and the extra 25% penalty imposed on buying crude oil from Russia should be completely eliminated. It is expected that a concrete decision will be taken in the new year from the ongoing talks between the two countries.

Claim- Indian Ambassador appealed to remove 25% tariff
Lindsey Graham said on January 5 that he had visited the house of Indian Ambassador Vinay Mohan Kwatra about a month ago. The biggest discussion in that meeting was about reducing the purchase of Russian oil by India.
He told that the Indian Ambassador had asked him to convey this message to President Trump that the extra 25 percent tariff imposed on India should be removed.
India reduces oil imports from Russia after 4 years
India has reduced crude oil imports from Russia for the first time since 2021. According to Reuters report, India’s Russian oil imports were about 17.7 lakh barrels per day in November, which has come down to about 12 lakh barrels per day in December. In the coming time, it may go below 10 lakh barrels per day.
The data coming in January may show a big decline in India’s Russian oil imports. US sanctions have come into effect on Russia’s two big oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil from November 21. After this, India’s oil import from Russia has started decreasing.
