Fear has increased in Taiwan ahead of the meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 24. Taiwan fears that Trump may adopt a soft stance on its issue in order to make a major economic agreement with China. America’s allies including Japan and South Korea are also facing the same concerns.

According to Reuters, Trump in May had called the sale of US arms to Taiwan a ‘bargaining tool’ for a deal with China. Now Jinping can again raise the issue of Taiwan with Trump.

In such a situation, Taiwan fears that Trump might back down on its issue while trying to strike a big deal with China. Any soft statement from America may also encourage Beijing to increase pressure on Taiwan.

First understand the case of Taiwan

Taiwan is an island located close to China. There is its own government and people choose their leaders through elections. Taiwan runs itself separately, but China considers it a part of itself.

China wants Taiwan to merge with it one day. Beijing has also made it clear that if necessary, it can use military force for this.

On the other hand, America provides arms to Taiwan so that it can protect itself. But America has not made it clear whether if China attacks Taiwan, the US military will directly enter the war to help it or not.

This is why America’s stance regarding Taiwan has always been a bit ambiguous. Washington does not openly challenge China and does not leave Taiwan alone.

What is Japan worried about?

It is not only the government there that is worried about Taiwan. Japan is also watching the Trump-Xi meeting closely.

According to Reuters, Japan wants America to stick to the diplomatic language used so far regarding Taiwan. Tokyo also wants that the issue of Taiwan should not dominate the meeting so much that the tension in the relations between the two countries increases further.

Two senior Japanese leaders told Reuters their biggest concern was that Trump might make any concessions on Taiwan in exchange for a major deal to buy American goods from China.

Midterm elections are to be held in America next year. In such a situation, a big trade agreement with China can also be important for Trump in domestic politics.

Taiwan expressed its concerns before the meeting

Before the meeting, the Taiwan government is continuously presenting its side to America. Senior Taiwanese official Shen Yu-chung said that he hoped that there would be no decision that would harm Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said he expected Xi to raise the Taiwan issue at the meeting. However, he also said that America has made it clear many times that there has been no change in its policy regarding Taiwan.

What is America’s ‘One China Policy’?

To understand America’s policy regarding Taiwan, it is important to understand ‘One China Policy’. America does not officially recognize Taiwan as a separate country. But it also does not accept China’s claim that it has complete authority over Taiwan.

Under this policy, America also maintains its diplomatic relations with China and also provides weapons to Taiwan for its security. That means America tries to maintain a balance between the two sides.

Why so much attention on Trump’s statement?

America has not yet made it clear whether the US Army will go to help Taiwan if China attacks Taiwan. Therefore, everyone keeps an eye on what Trump says about Taiwan.

Former President Joe Biden had said several times during his tenure that America would help Taiwan if China attacked. But Trump has not said such a clear thing about this till now.

Two Japanese government sources told Reuters that any sudden statement by Trump could also increase concerns about Taiwan. China has been continuously asking America not to support the idea of making Taiwan a separate country.

Taiwan’s issue is also related to the world economy

The issue of Taiwan is not limited only to the power tussle between China and America. This may also affect world business.

Taiwan makes more than 90% of the world’s most modern computer chips. These chips are used in mobile phones, cars, computers, missiles and other modern devices.

If there is a major military conflict here, the supply of chips may stop. This may affect the production of cars, electronics and other goods in many countries of the world.

Malaysia’s director general of national security Raja Nushirwan Zainal Abidin told Reuters that if there was a conflict in Taiwan, it would have an impact on the whole world.
