Union Minister Kiren Rijiju on Monday raised questions on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s ‘break patriarchy’ statement in the Lok Sabha.
He asked why the Congress party targets only Hindu traditions and remains silent on the status of minority women.
Rijiju described Congress’s approach to social reforms as selective on social media. He said that if the party stands with women, then it should stand with every woman of every community.

Rahul Gandhi spoke on women’s safety and rights
Rijiju’s reaction came after Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi’s speech at the ‘Students’ Echo’ campaign program in Pune on Saturday. Rahul Gandhi had raised issues related to women’s safety, rights and social control.
He had said that violence, insults and concerns expressed in the name of care can also become a means of harassment.
During the programme, Gandhi criticized a line related to Manusmriti. He described what it said regarding women’s freedom as problematic.
Quoting Manusmriti, Gandhi said, “In childhood a woman belongs to her father. In youth she belongs to her husband. After her husband’s death she belongs to her sons. Woman should never be independent.”
He clearly condemned these words, saying, “This is a direct quote from Manusmriti and these words are shameful because they should never have been said.”
Addressing women students at the programme, the Congress MP appealed to decisively end the patriarchal structure. She said the country would have to “break down the existing patriarchy” to truly empower women.
