Actor Ranveer Singh’s film Dhurandhar seems to be embroiled in controversies even before its release. Parents of Ashok Chakra and Sena Medal awardee martyr Major Mohit Sharma have filed a petition in the Delhi High Court demanding an immediate stay on the release of Dhurandhar.

According to a report in Bar & Bench, in its petition, the family has alleged that the film directly depicts the life, covert operations and martyrdom of the Special Forces officer without taking permission from the Indian Army or Major Sharma’s legal heirs.

Ranveer Singh's character in the film is said to be inspired by martyr Major Mohit Sharma.

Ranveer Singh’s character in the film is said to be inspired by martyr Major Mohit Sharma.

The family argues, however, that media reports and online discussions have linked Dhurandhar to Major Sharma’s story. But the filmmakers have neither accepted such inspiration nor consulted the family at any point.

The petition states that the martyr is ‘not a commercial commodity’. And it has also been said that no one has the right to change the life of truth and dignity of a soldier for his own benefit without permission.

The family further said that the unauthorized depiction violates the martyr’s posthumous personality rights under Article 21 of the Constitution, as well as the family’s right to privacy and dignity.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), Indian Army and the director and producer of the film have been made parties in the petition.

The petitioners have requested the court to stay the release of the film and mandate private screening for Major Sharma’s family before any public premiere.

The family has also sought a declaration that any future films based on actual military martyrs will have to take prior permission from both the Army and the legal heirs of the martyr.

Talking about Dhurandhar, this film is going to be released on 5th December. The film has been written and directed by ‘Uri’ fame director Aditya Dhar. Apart from Ranveer Singh, Arjun Rampal, Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Khanna, R Madhavan will be seen in the film.

Madhavan is playing the role of National Security Advisor of India Ajit Doval in the film. At the same time, actress Sara Arjun, who is 20 years younger than Ranveer, will be seen opposite Ranveer in the film.
