The Meteorological Department has issued a cold day alert in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand on Sunday. Along with this, there is alert of dense fog in 18 states of the country including Madhya Pradesh, UP, Chhattisgarh.
In many cities of UP, visibility is less than 50 meters in the morning. According to the Meteorological Department, a 40-day period of severe cold, which is called Chillai Kalan, is starting in Jammu and Kashmir from December 21. During this period, there is heavy snowfall and the minimum temperature falls continuously.
There is a possibility of rain and snowfall in the hilly areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The minimum temperature in Kukumseri of Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal on Saturday was -5.7°C. Severe cold continues in Rajasthan also. The minimum temperature in Sikar was 5.4°C.

- Effect of cold wave in Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
- Light snowfall possible in higher reaches of Himachal (Lahaul-Spiti, Chamba, Kullu).
- Dense fog may persist in some districts of Jharkhand.
December 24: Fog in 4 states, severe cold alert in 2 states
- Dense fog in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.
- Cold wave conditions in Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
- Very low visibility in the morning and night in the plains of North India.
- The Meteorological Department has advised caution while traveling.

Chillai Kalan starts from today in Jammu and Kashmir
Chillai Kalan has started in Jammu and Kashmir from 21st December. Chillai is a Persian word, in Hindi it means ‘very cold’. Now there will be a possibility of heavy snowfall here in the next 40 days.
