America’s 64-year-old Captain Cranston Wilson is going to become the most ‘senior’ female pilot among the 18 thousand pilots of the world’s largest United Airlines. This achievement is very special because till now no woman has reached this position in the 100 years of this airline. In a male-dominated field, where even today the share of female pilots is only 6%, Cranston’s journey has been full of ups and downs. His success proves that if the intentions are high, then even without a college degree, an annual package of ₹3.70 crore ($4 lakh) can be achieved through hard work. Read the story of her life… Cranston’s journey of breaking the wall of gender discrimination started at the age of 9, when she saw the world for the first time from the window of an airplane. She says, ‘Then my father took me on a short air trip for photography. I was smiling very happy that day. When the father asked the reason for happiness, Cranston’s answer was simple and clear, ‘This is what I will do when I grow up.’ However, no one had told her then that girls do not often become pilots, so Cranston never considered it impossible. Afraid of failing the first time he applied, Cranston began taking flight lessons while attending college. He earned a Student Pilot Certificate, Private Pilot License, and other flying certifications. The interesting thing is that for this he did not need any traditional degree. His ‘Flying Hours’ became the real degree. According to Cranston, the first time one of his students gave him an airline application for a job, he was doubtful about his success. ‘I thought it was impossible for me to be selected,’ says Wilson. But at the age of 22, his ability took him to the cockpit. Then he has been a captain for 31 years while traveling the journey of co-pilot and pilot. Cranston’s path to the top was not easy as she stayed away from home during festivals and could not attend children’s birthdays. She tells that in her initial days she had to stay away from her family. She says, ‘Being a pilot means you will miss children’s birthdays and their matches. If you want to stay home for every festival, then perhaps this area is not for you. Today she flies Boeing 787 and spends 12 days a month in air travel. He has only one mantra to his crew, ‘We have to make such a safe landing that the next day we get a place not only in the news, but in the hearts of the passengers.’
