What is G7, which countries are in it?
- G7 i.e. ‘Group of Seven’, is a group of 7 countries of the world, which are called ‘modern economy’ countries of the world. These countries are America, France, Britain, Japan, Italy, Canada and Germany. Earlier its name used to be G-8. In 2014, when Russia occupied the neighboring country Crimea, the other member countries expelled Russia from the group. Its name became G7.
- Indian Prime Ministers have usually been invited to the G7 summit. Manmohan Singh, who was PM from 2004 to 2014, participated in the G-8 summit five times.
- PM Modi was invited for the first time to the summit held in Biarritz, France in 2019. After this, America was to host in 2020, but America then canceled the summit. Except for this one year, PM Modi attended the G7 summit every year from 2019 to 2024. In 2021, he joined it through virtual medium.
- Attended the G7 summit in Germany in 2022, Japan in 2023 and Italy in 2024. Attended the summit held in Canada in 2025.

What is Bharat Innovates?
‘Bharat Innovates’ is a new global initiative of the Education Ministry, which was announced by Prime Minister Modi during the inauguration of the India-France Innovation Year in February 2026. It aims to connect Indian startups, IITs, IISc, universities and research institutes with global investors, companies, universities and research organizations.
The event will take place at the Palais des Expositions in the city of Nice from 14 to 16 June. This mega summit will be inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron.
France included in India’s top-2 arms suppliers
According to the news of French newspaper La Monde in the year 2025, France has been supporting India even at a time when all the big powers of the world including America had left India.
After the nuclear test in Pokhran, countries like America, Japan, Germany and Britain imposed many sanctions on India, but France supported India.
France started selling arms to India ignoring US sanctions and has now become India’s second largest defense arms supplier after Russia.
India has received Mirage 2000 fighter jet, Rafale fighter jet and Scorpene submarine from France.

France always supported India on international forums
During the G20 summit held in September 2023, PM Modi had invited US President Joe Biden to attend the Republic Day celebrations in 2024, but in December he refused to come to India.
At such a time, India sent an invitation to French President Emmanuel Macron to participate in the Republic Day. He accepted it immediately.
France has always supported India on international forums. French President Emmanuel Macron had demanded to make India a permanent member of the Security Council in the United Nations in September 2024.
Apart from this, France is also in favor of making India a member of the Nuclear Supply Group (NSG).

What is G7 Summit, what is the special thing on its agenda this time?
G7 summit is held every year to discuss a fixed agenda, which is organized by the country chairing the G7. Actually, all the 7 countries of G7 preside over it in turn.
This year France is presiding. In such a situation, the G7 summit will be held in Evian city of France. The agenda of this summit includes issues of geopolitics crises (Ukraine war, Iran-Israel tensions, situation in Gaza, Lebanon and the Hormuz Route, security challenges of the Middle East), global economic cooperation and imbalances and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Apart from this, leaders and officials of G7 member countries hold several meetings a year, in which many agreements are made and official statements are issued on major world events.
Initially the agenda of the G7 was to find solutions to issues like economic challenges and climate change. Later political and security related issues also got involved. The decisions of the G7 on global issues impact the entire world.
For example, the G7 created the Global Fund to fight malaria and AIDS in 2002. Provided economic help to countries like Indonesia and Thailand during the financial crisis in 1998. Decided to impose strict sanctions on Russia and help Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine war.

How is G7 different from G20
The G7 has no permanent office and its member states cannot pass any international laws. The biggest issue in the G20 is the world economy, while political issues are also important for the G7. Apart from the G7 countries, BRICS countries are also included in the G20 formed in 1999.
Apart from India, these countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey and the European Union. According to Rajan Kumar, countries with new and growing economies have also been included in G20.
Even though the agenda of G7 and G20 is similar, at present G20 is the more effective group. In 2020, US President Trump also called G7 a very outdated group.
