Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said on Sunday that burqa and niqab will be banned in schools. The cabinet will take a decision on this soon.
He said that the number of foreign students in schools will also be limited. Meloni made the announcement in Rome at the national festival of the youth organization of his party Brothers of Italy.
Under the rules, those parents of foreign students whose children have difficulty integrating into the school system will have to take Italian language classes. To become a law, after the approval of the government, approval from the Parliament will be required within 60 days. Currently, burqa and niqab are banned in 24 countries of the world including France and China.
Statistics of foreign students in schools
The restrictions will affect a large number of students studying in Italian schools. According to research institute Fondazione ISMU, about 9 lakh 30 thousand students study in Italian schools who do not have Italian citizenship.
These students constitute about 11.6% of all students in the country. The number of foreign minors in Italy has decreased by 4.5% in the last 10 years.
European courts upheld the ban on burqa.
Courts in Europe believe that the burqa ban is right for social interaction, while human rights organizations and the United Nations consider it an attack on women’s religious freedom.
On the other hand, foreign workers contribute 9% to Italy’s GDP and sectors like farming, construction and elderly care depend on them. If the strict rules of the Meloni government make it difficult for these workers to come and live, then there could be a huge shortage of laborers in Italy.
