In 2021 Meloni and journalist Giulia had a fight on social media.
A Milan court in Italy has fined a journalist 5,000 euros (Rs 4,57,114) for mocking Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
According to a Reuters report, journalist Giulia Cortese (36) was also fined 1200 euros (Rs 1,09,723) in October 2021 for mocking Meloni’s short height. The court termed it body shaming.
Cortes told Meloni- you are only 4 feet tall
In 2021, Meloni and Giulia had a fight on social media. After this, Giorgia Meloni, the leader of Italy’s right-wing party Brothers of Italy, moved the court against journalist Cortes. She was then the leader of the opposition party.
Cortes had shared a fake photo of Meloni on social media with a picture of fascist leader Benito Mussolini in the background. After Meloni objected, journalist Cortes removed the photo. However, in the very next post, he made fun of Meloni’s short height.
Cortes posted, “You can’t scare me Meloni. You are only 4 feet tall. So small that I can’t even see you.” In Italian media reports, Prime Minister Meloni’s height is said to be between 5.2 feet and 5.3 feet.

Journalist Cortes has 90 days to appeal the sentence.
Meloni will donate the fine to charity
Meloni had filed a complaint against Cortes for this insulting behavior. However, the court acquitted Cortes in the ‘wrong picture’ case. The court said that showing Meloni with Mussolini is not a crime.
Cortes has the right to appeal the sentence within 90 days. Meanwhile, Meloni’s lawyer said she would donate the compensation she receives from Cortes to a charity.

Complaints against journalists have increased in Italy during Meloni’s tenure.
Cases against journalists increased in Italy
Reporters Without Borders (RWB), an organization associated with journalists, has expressed concern over the court’s decision against Cortes. RWB says that efforts to silence journalists in Italy have intensified. The number of cases filed against them has increased. This is the reason why Italy has fallen five places to 46th place in the World Press Freedom Index in 2024.
This is not the first time Meloni has dragged journalists to court. In 2023, a Rome court fined best-selling author Roberto Saviano 1,000 euros. Saviano insulted Meloni on TV in 2021. Saviano was angry with Meloni because he takes a very tough stand against illegal immigrants coming to Italy.
Georgia Meloni’s old speech goes viral, she said- Sharia law will not be allowed to be implemented in Italy
