Recently a major train accident occurred in southern Oaxaca, Mexico, in which an interoceanic train full of passengers derailed.
A train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, after which the engine of the train overturned. Many bogies also overturned.
In this, 13 people died and 98 people were injured. This train was running on a new railroad connecting the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean. This railway line is operated by the Mexican Navy.
According to the Mexican Navy, there were 250 people on board the train, including nine crew members. The accident happened at a junction between Chiwela and Nijanda towns.
Of the injured, 36 are being treated in the hospital. President Claudia Sheinbaum said on social media platform X that five of the injured were in serious condition. He has given instructions to send senior officers to the spot and help the families of the deceased.

Oaxaca state Governor Salomon Jara posted on Twitter that several government agencies had reached the scene of the accident and were helping the injured.
Mexico’s Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos also informed on social media that an investigation into the incident has been started. This train covers a distance of approximately 290 kilometers from the Salina Cruise port on the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean.
The rail line was inaugurated in 2023
This interoceanic train service was launched in 2023 by the then President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. This is part of the promotion of rail travel in the southern part of Mexico and the development of infrastructure in the Tehuantepec Isthmus region.
The government plans to make the region a strategic corridor for international trade, with ports and rail lines connecting the two oceans. Railway service has been affected due to this accident and rescue operations are going on.
