According to sources, the government is going to introduce a bill in Parliament to amend the 1995 law governing the Waqf Board to ensure greater accountability and transparency in their functioning and to make women’s participation mandatory in these bodies. This step has been taken in the backdrop of demands arising from within the Muslim community.

The amendment bill will make it mandatory for Waqf boards to register with district collectors to ensure fair valuation of their properties.

Muslim Personal Law Board spokesperson SQR Ilyas said that the All India Muslim Personal Law Board considers it necessary to make it clear that any change in the Waqf Act, 2013 that changes the nature of Waqf properties or makes it easier for the government or any individual to usurp it will not be acceptable. Similarly, reducing or restricting the powers of Waqf boards will not be tolerated.

Let us tell you that the central government is preparing to bring a bill in the Parliament to amend the 1995 law that governs the Waqf Board. It is being said that this amendment bill is being considered to be brought in the Parliament in this session itself. Earlier, in the cabinet meeting on Friday, the proposal to amend the Waqf Act by 40 has been approved. After the amendment bill is passed in the Parliament, the uncontrolled powers of the Waqf Board will be reduced. The board will not be able to declare ownership over any property without verification.
