Do you remember this popular character seen with Sanjay Dutt in the film Munnabhai MBBS?
The character’s name was Karan, who tries to commit suicide after losing his life, to whom Munna gives new hope. This character was played by actor Vishal Thakkar who has been missing for the last 10 years. Neither did anyone see him nor did anyone hear his voice.
It is 31st December 2015
Mumbai, the city of dreams, was glowing with New Year celebrations, everyone was celebrating the New Year in different ways. Vishal Thakkar lived with mother Durga Thakkar and father in an apartment in Mulund, Mumbai. At around 10.30 pm, Vishal asked his mother to go watch a movie on the special occasion of New Year. Mother replied that she was very tired, so Vishal should come and watch the movie alone. Vishal took some Rs 500 from his mother and left the house. This was the last time mother saw Vishal.
He had gone with his friends to watch the Hollywood film Star Wars, a post related to which he had shared on his Facebook account.
It was late at night, but Vishal did not return home. Mother thought that perhaps he might have stayed somewhere with friends.
Late at night, his father received a message from Vishal’s number, in which it was written – ‘I am going to the New Year party, see you in the morning.’
After receiving the message from his son, he felt reassured and went to sleep. When mother woke up the next morning, Vishal had still not returned. Mother made several calls on his number, but his number was also switched off.
Vishal was suffering for some days and was often out of the house. The mother waited for Vishal’s return for about 5 days, but no news was received from him. He contacted all of Vishal’s friends, but the results were disappointing.
Finally, on January 6, 2016, the mother went to Mulund police station and lodged a missing complaint for Vishal and a search for him was started.
When Vishal’s mobile location was traced during the police investigation, it was revealed that he had stayed at Ghodbunder on Thane Road for 45 minutes at around 11.45 am on January 1, 2016. It was revealed from the call records that his girlfriend Rajni Rathod was also present with him at that time.
The police immediately called Rajni for questioning. Rajni was the person who saw Vishal for the last time.
Chapter- 2
Last location and statement of girlfriend
According to Rajni’s statement, she met Vishal Thakkar the night before i.e. on 31st December for New Year celebrations. Both of them watched the movie with friends and went out to party. All the friends stayed at a resort after a long drive in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. Everyone partied till late night and the next morning they left for Mumbai.
It was morning so Vishal and Rajni stopped at a hotel on Ghodbunder Road to have tea. Both of them were drinking tea when Vishal told Rajni that he was going straight from here to Andheri, where he had to meet a friend. Vishal was getting late, so he left Rajni there and left in the auto. He had taken an auto for Andheri, but after some time when Rajni called him, his number started getting switched off. Rajni tried hard to find him, but there was no trace of him. At this time they came to know that Vishal’s parents had filed a missing complaint.
Even after interrogating Rajni, the police did not have any clue. The investigation of this case was given to the famous constable of that time, Rakesh Pandey, who investigated the complaint of 800 missing people and found them. But this case was very complicated for him.
The police inquired at the hospitals located on all the routes from Ghodbunder to Andheri to see if Vishal had met with an accident, but no person similar to him was admitted. After this, the police investigated from the kidnapping angle, but his family did not receive any call for ransom.
After investigating every possible angle, the police searched Vishal’s bank accounts. There was very little money in his account and he had not done any transaction since the day he went missing. The police interrogated every friend of Vishal, but the police could not get any information related to Vishal. Nor did he receive any note from Vishal in which he had talked about leaving the house voluntarily.
Chapter- 3
Rape allegations and arrest
Initially the police suspected Vishal Thakkar’s girlfriend Rajni Rathod. Because their relationship was not good for the last few months.
In fact, just 3 months before Vishal’s disappearance, his girlfriend Rajni had leveled rape charges against him, due to which Vishal was arrested.
Rajni had filed a complaint against Vishal at Mumbai’s Charkop police station in October 2015. There were allegations that Vishal had promised to marry her. Both were in a live-in relationship for a long time, but after a few days, Vishal started postponing the talk of marriage. The fights between the two started increasing, Vishal used to even raise his hand on her, after which Rajni ended her relationship with him.
One day, on his birthday, Vishal had called him to his apartment in Charkop to meet him to apologize. According to Rajni’s complaint, the two reconciled through talks, but then Vishal forcibly had sex with her and physically abused her. Rajni somehow controlled herself and went straight to Charkop police station.
After the complaint was registered, the police arrested Vishal. However, after some time, Rajni withdrew her complaint. He said that Vishal wants to repair relations with him again. Both of them patched up, but after rape charges were leveled, Vishal got infamous in the film industry. This was the reason why he almost stopped getting work. All his savings were exhausted with time, due to which he became very worried. Vishal had also told the police that Vishal was in depression due to not getting work.
On the basis of last location, Vishal Thakkar missing case was transferred from Mulund police station to Kasarvadavali police station.
In an interview given to Dainik Bhaskar, Vishal Thakkar’s mother Durga Thakkar had said-
I wake up every morning hoping that my son will return or call today. Years have passed, but my son is missing. The police authority has no clue. We have not given up hope. I know that one day my son will definitely return.
When his mother was asked about the rape charges against Vishal, she said- ‘Vishal had no bad intentions towards his girlfriend. She even lived in our house. Many times I used to make him sleep in my bedroom itself. My son wanted to marry her. But Vishal came to know that she was with another boy and was cheating on him.
‘When Vishal came to know about her affair, she started threatening Vishal to prove herself right and then lodged a complaint against my son.’
‘At that time Vishal was working in the show Thapki Pyar Ki. One day that girl reached the set. Both returned home at 2 o’clock in the night. At night I saw both of them sitting on the sofa in the living room. I didn’t like it. Vishal understood and asked the girl to return home. That girl was not going, so Vishal angrily threw her out of the house. Perhaps only then would Vishal have raised his hand on him.

Mother further said, ‘Next morning at 8 o’clock Vishal left for shooting. At 11 o’clock the girl brought the police to our house and started saying that Vishal had beaten her. Vishal was not there so I myself went to the police station. Later I was sent away. We told Vishal not to come home and stay in a hotel because the police is looking for him. In such a situation, instead of staying in a huge hotel, I went to Salangpur to have darshan of God. The same night the girl filed a rape case against him. Two days later, Vishal came to know through the newspaper that he had been accused of rape. As soon as he got the news, he returned to Mumbai and presented himself at the police station. He was arrested. On the third day of filing the case, the girl realized her mistake and withdrew the case.
Vishal’s mother Durga Thakkar told that after the case, Vishal went into depression. He even tried to commit suicide once, but was saved in time and admitted to the hospital. The girl came to meet him in the hospital and apologized. After this Vishal and him started talking again.
Vishal’s mother says that on January 1, 2016, Vishal might have had a fight with his girlfriend, after which he might have run away fearing a false case. He told that Vishal had neither left the house with any clothes nor any documents. If he had to run away from home, he would have taken at least his belongings and documents with him.
Vishal’s co-star Tanuj (who played the role of Iyer) in the TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah had once taken his mother to an astrologer. There he was told that his son was alive. Vishal’s mother said that if Vishal is alive, then why did he never come to meet her, or why did he never contact her.
Girlfriend has also died
Vishal’s mother has told that his girlfriend also died of a heart attack a few years ago. Now he is not in this world. Along with this, his family has also forgiven him for implicating him in a false case.
Today, 10 years have passed since Vishal Thakkar went missing, but there is no news about him. His family is still waiting for his return. Information about what happened that day and where Vishal went could not be obtained even after a long investigation by the police.
Vishal Thakkar came to films from Chandni Bar
Vishal Thakkar was born on 15 October 1984 in a poor family. When father’s business failed, mother used to run the household by working in a parlor. Vishal was talented since childhood. One day, while doing Garba, a neighbor noticed him. He advised Vishal to go to the ongoing audition for a TV ad. After the audition, he got the role of standing behind cricketer Sourav Ganguly. But Vishal was giving such good expressions that he was given the lead role in the ad along with Sourav Ganguly. Thanks to this ad, Vishal started getting many ads, which included brands like Rasna, Berger Paint, Hajmola, Himalaya. After this, Vishal got the role of Tabu’s son Abhay Sawant in the film Chandni Bar, released in 2001. Next, Vishal was seen in Sanjay Dutt starrer film Munnabhai MBBS, released in 2003. In the film, he played the character of a young boy named Karan, who tries to commit suicide after his girlfriend leaves him.
Vishal Thakkar got recognition from Munnabhai MBBS, after which he appeared in many films like Bobby Deol starrer film Tango Charlie, Tum: A Dangerous Obsession. Apart from films, Vishal has been a part of many TV shows like Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, Thapki Pyar Ki.
Vishal’s mother told that even today offers for films and TV shows come for Vishal.
