Police have arrested a 40-year-old man for killing about 20 stray cats in Chembur, Mumbai. The accused has been identified as Shiva Keshav Joshi. Police identified the accused on the basis of CCTV footage of the surrounding areas. During interrogation, Joshi confessed to killing the cats in anger. In fact, on September 4, dead bodies of several cats were found in the area. Some kittens were also found dead and injured. Animal rights organization PETA India had offered a reward of ₹ 50 thousand for information about the person killing the cats. Four cats were found dead on September 3. Rubina Abdul Malik Pathan has been helping in feeding and treating stray cats in the area for the last 5-6 years. According to his complaint, on September 3, he found four dead cats in the area. Three days later, on the morning of 6 September, she reached near Shani temple to feed the cats. There they found a cat and its baby soaked in blood. Both had injuries on their heads. Seeing the wound, it was suspected that he was hit with some heavy or sharp object. The bodies were sent for post-mortem. Rubina had contacted PETA India and other animal welfare organizations for help. On the advice of the organisation, the bodies of the two cats, found on September 6, were sent to a veterinary hospital in Parel for post-mortem and further investigation. With the help of Pooja Srivastava, Rubina lodged a complaint at the RCF police station.
