After the accident, the Navy issued a statement saying that the speedboat was on engine trials. The captain lost control of the boat and it collided with a passenger boat.

Mumbai Police has raised questions on Navy’s statement. The police have asked the Navy as to who gave permission for the trial run near the Gateway of India. The police have also written a letter to the Maharashtra Maritime Board seeking complete information about the accident.

Rescue continues on third day…whole case in 5 points

  1. On December 18, at around 3:30 pm, a Navy speed boat collided with a passenger boat, after which the passenger boat started sinking. There were about 107 people aboard the boat with a capacity of 90 passengers.
  2. There were 6 people on the Navy boat, out of which only 2 could be saved. Altogether 113 people were present on both the boats. So far 14 people have died.
  3. The Navy rescued the people on board 25 minutes after the boat collision. The rescue operation continues for the third day. The Navy is also searching for a 7-year-old child missing after the collision on Friday.
  4. A case was registered against the Navy craft driver at Colaba Police Station. The FIR includes sections of causing death by negligence, endangering the personal safety or life of others and reckless driving.
  5. After the accident, wearing life jackets has been made mandatory while boating around the Gateway of India.

3 statements of eyewitnesses, said- Navy boat was doing stunts

  • The eyewitness told that before the collision, the Navy speedboat was performing stunts, so I recorded its video. The driver of the navy boat was showing off. The speedboat was moving in a zigzag pattern. No one in our boat was wearing a life jacket.
  • The driver of the tourist boat said that we reached the spot first. The people on the overturned boat were waving for help. We rescued 16 people and brought them safely to Gateway of India. I have never seen such an incident in my life.
  • Arif Bamne of Mumbai Port Trust, who was involved in the rescue, said – When we reached for rescue, we saw that people were shouting for help. Some people were crying. We saved women and children first. Three to four foreigners were also among those shouting for help. We rescued around 20-25 people. A little girl was unconscious. Water had entered his lungs. We applied pressure on his chest, after which he started breathing again.

Navy rescued with 11 boats, 4 helicopters Relief and rescue operations were carried out with the help of Navy, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Coast Guard, Yellowgate Police Station 3 and local fishing boats.

11 boats of Navy, 3 boats of Marine Police and 1 boat of Coast Guard were involved in the rescue operation. 4 helicopters also participated in the rescue operation. The passengers were brought back to the Gateway of India. From where he was admitted to different hospitals.

PM will give ₹2 lakh and CM ₹5 lakh to the families of the deceased.

PM Modi also announced an ex-gratia amount of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. At the same time, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis assured that the government will provide all possible assistance to the affected people. He also announced that an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh would be provided to the families of those who lost their lives from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
