Airlines, ATMs, banking and corporate operations have been badly affected in India, America, Australia, Germany and England. Television broadcasting has come to a halt in Britain. In technical terms, this is being called a mega IT outage. We try to understand the origin of the problem, its cause and the challenges in fixing it from DB Digital’s CTO Paresh Goyal.

What problems are you experiencing with your computer systems?
Windows 10 users around the world are having system crashes, that is, their systems are either shutting down suddenly or restarting. Because of this, a message with a blue background is being displayed on the computer screen. This is being called the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error. In such a situation, no work can be done on the computer.

This message means that the system cannot operate safely. On this error, the computer starts restarting automatically and the chances of data loss increase.

What is the reason for the error and when did it start?
To protect computer systems from cyber attacks and viruses, a software called Crowdstrike is used in Windows-based computers. This is a very well-known antivirus software and big companies use it for security.

On Thursday night (18 July), Crowdstrike Software released an update which suddenly caused a glitch in Windows computers. All the computers on which this update was applied started crashing. The airlines’ booking and check-in service is based on these computers. Hence, all these services stopped working.

What did the company do after discovering the irregularity?
After discovering that the antivirus update was causing the computers to crash, CrowdStrike has removed the update from its website, but it is not yet clear how the computers on which the update had been installed will be restored.

How many services are affected by the IT outage?
CrowdStrike provides security to Microsoft’s Windows based computers. Two major services of Microsoft Azure And Office 365 But it has had the biggest impact. The services of the companies and people who use them have come to a halt.

Both platforms are used in many technical services like airlines, shopping malls, banking, ticket booking etc. Due to this, millions of people around the world are facing problems.

What is the biggest challenge in eliminating the glitch?
Computers have crashed due to the impact of the CrowdStrike update. That is, either the computer systems are shut down or are suddenly giving a message to restart. In such a situation, it is a big challenge for CrowdStrike to repair the system through remote access, because it will be difficult to install the repaired software on the crashed computer. If this work is done manually, it will take a lot of time and till then people will have to suffer.
