Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), the opposition alliance in Maharashtra, has fielded NCP (Sharad faction) chief Sharad Pawar as its candidate from the state in the Rajya Sabha elections. Congress and Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) have announced their support to Pawar on Wednesday.
Earlier, Congress, NCP (Sharad faction) and Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) had staked claim on one seat which the opposition can win. However, Congress General Secretary Ramesh Chennithala said on Wednesday that the party leadership has agreed to Pawar’s name and decided to support him.
Based on the current numbers in the state, the opposition alliance is in a position to win only one seat. Pawar will file nomination on Thursday (March 5). Elections are to be held on March 16 for 37 seats in Rajya Sabha from 10 states, including seven seats in Maharashtra. Voting will take place between 9 am to 4 pm and counting of votes will take place at 5 pm on the same day.

Opposition has 25 out of 37 seats.
On February 18, the Election Commission had announced the election dates for 37 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states. Elections for 37 seats are to be held on March 16. Of the seats that are falling vacant, 12 are with the NDA and 25 are held by the opposition.
Maximum elections are to be held on 7 seats in Maharashtra, 6 in Tamil Nadu and 5 each in West Bengal and Bihar. The tenure of Sharad Pawar, Ramdas Athawale, Kanimozhi, Tiruchi Shiva, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh is ending on April 2.

Voting will be done with special pen on ballot paper
The Election Commission has said that while casting the vote, only violet colored sketch pen of the prescribed standard given by the Returning Officer will be used. Use of any other pen will not be valid.
The Commission has said that observers will be appointed to conduct the elections in a peaceful and fair manner. The Election Commission has also launched awareness campaigns regarding EVMs and VVPATs in Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
According to the Commission, more than 1.20 lakh people participated in the demo camp in 5 states and one union territory. More than 1.16 lakh people cast mock votes. Till February 10, more than 29 thousand polling station locations have been covered with mobile demo vans. This campaign is being run through EVM demo centers and mobile vans.

This is how Rajya Sabha elections are held
The election process for Rajya Sabha MPs is quite different from other elections. Members of Rajya Sabha are elected indirectly, that is, they are elected by the MLAs and not by the public.
Elections are held every two years, as the Rajya Sabha is a permanent house and one-third of its members retire every two years.
The total number of Rajya Sabha seats is 245. Of these, elections are held indirectly for 233 seats and 12 members are nominated by the President.
The number of votes required to win the Rajya Sabha elections is already decided. The number of votes is calculated based on the total number of MLAs and the number of Rajya Sabha seats. In this, the value of vote of an MLA is 100.
Let us understand the formula from the example of 7 seats in Maharashtra.
To win any candidate in the Rajya Sabha elections, a certain number of votes is required, which is called the winning quota. There are a total of 288 MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly. The seats getting vacant are 7.
Total number of MLAs x 100/ (Rajya Sabha seats + 1) = +1 288 Therefore, to win one Rajya Sabha seat in Maharashtra, at least 36 MLAs will be required.
