The meeting of Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (Congress, NCP SP and Shiv Sena UBT) has started for the sharing of all 288 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly elections. This is the fourth meeting of the alliance this month for seat sharing.

Tickets of 5 current MLAs of GRACE may be cut
It is almost certain that the 5 Congress MLAs who cross-voted in the Legislative Council (MLC) elections in Maharashtra will be denied tickets in the assembly elections. According to reports, the party will give a chance to new faces. However, no official information has been given by the Congress.

The MLAs whose tickets were cut include Sulabha Khodke, Zeeshan Siddiqui, Hiraman Khoskar, Jitesh Antapurkar, Mohan Hambarde. There were reports of 7-8 Congress MLAs cross voting in the MLC elections.

NDA had won 9 out of 11 seats in the Legislative Council elections
In the MLC elections held on July 12, NDA won 9 out of 11 seats. Whereas, INDIA Block won only 2 out of 3. A candidate needed the votes of 23 MLAs to win the election. In the Maharashtra Assembly, BJP has 103 MLAs, Shiv Sena 37, NCP 39, Congress 37, Shiv Sena (Uddhav faction) 15 and NCP (Sharad faction) has 13 MLAs.

The term of the BJP-Shiv Sena government will end in November 2024
At present, there is a BJP-Shiv Sena government in Maharashtra. Its term is ending on 26 November 2024, so elections may be held in October 2024. In the 2019 assembly elections, BJP became the largest party by winning 105 seats.

However, the Shiv Sena (pre-split) and BJP alliance could not work out the issue of the chief minister’s post. Shiv Sena (pre-split) with 56 MLAs then formed the government with the Congress (45 MLAs) and NCP (pre-split party) (53 MLAs). Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray became the chief minister.

After this, in May 2022, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde in the MVA government rebelled along with 39 MLAs and joined the BJP. Eknath Shinde took oath as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on 30 June 2022.

With this, Shiv Sena split into two factions. One faction was formed by Shinde faction and the other by Uddhav faction. On February 17, 2023, the Election Commission ordered that the party’s name ‘Shiv Sena’ and the party’s election symbol ‘bow and arrow’ will remain with the Eknath Shinde faction.
