Jarange said that if the demands are not considered within 3 months, he will protest in Mumbai.
Maratha activist Manoj Jarange ended his 20-day hunger strike on Thursday. He has given 90 days time to the Maharashtra government to consider his demands. Jarange said that if the demands are not met then he will protest again in Mumbai.
Jarange had started a hunger strike on August 29 from Antarwali Sarati of Jalna. He was demanding reservation in OBC quota for Marathas on the basis of Kunbi lineage. Apart from this, a demand was also placed for recognition of Hyderabad, Satara and Aundh Gazettes and issuance of Kunbi certificate on the basis of old records.
After the demands were not heard, Jarange started a march to Mumbai on 15 September. However, when he reached Patoda in Beed the next day, his health deteriorated, due to which he stopped the march. According to doctors, his blood pressure and blood sugar had dropped significantly and he was also dehydrated.
Jarange had paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj before leaving for Mumbai from Jalna on 15 September.
Decision after talks with government delegation
Jarange decided to end the hunger strike after a meeting with the Maharashtra government delegation in Patoda. The delegation included Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, Dada Bhuse, MLC Prasad Lad, MLA Suresh Dhas and senior officials.
On behalf of the government, Jarange was informed about the work started on the demands related to Maratha reservation. Vikhe Patil said that after receiving the written opinion of the Advocate General on Satara and Kolhapur Gazette, the action may take about 3-4 months. He also asked Jaranga to appoint three representatives who could monitor the progress of government work.
Government says- action on 12 out of 13 demands
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had said that the government has taken action on 12 out of 13 legally valid demands of the Maratha protesters. He also questioned the timing of the agitation during Ganesh Utsav.
Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil had appealed to Jarange to end the agitation and said that the government is ready for talks. Minister Ashish Shelar had also appealed to them to take care of their health and avoid demonstrations during Ganesh Utsav.
There was movement in Mumbai also in 2025
Jarange went on a hunger strike at Azad Maidan in August-September 2025. During that time, traffic and normal activities in South Mumbai were affected due to the arrival of a large number of supporters in Mumbai.
The movement ended on 2 September 2025 after the government accepted 6 out of 8 of their demands and started the process of Kunbi Classification Certificate.
