Two people, including a retired army jawan, were shot dead in Manipur’s Ukhrul district around 2:30 pm on Saturday. SW Chinaoshang (46 years) and Yaruingam Washum (42 years) were going from Imphal to Ukhrul when the militants suddenly started firing on their vehicle.
A day before the incident, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had visited Ukhrul and appealed to the Kuki and Naga communities to maintain peace and dialogue.
The investigation of the case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Security forces have started a search operation to find the attackers. Also, an appeal has been made to all communities to maintain peace and not indulge in any provocation.
Kuki Council condemned the incident
The Kuki Jo Council has denied any role for the community in the incident. Meanwhile, the Working Committee of Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) condemned the incident and alleged that the attack was carried out by the Kuki community. The committee has demanded immediate search operation in the area and ensuring the safety of citizens.
2 children killed in April 6 bomb attack
On April 6, militants hurled a bomb at a house late at night in Moirang Tronglaobi area in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. In which a 5 year old boy and a six month old girl died. The police officer said that when the bomb exploded in the house, the children were sleeping with their mother in the bedroom.
After this the mob also attacked the CRPF camp 100 meters away from the incident site. In retaliatory firing, 2 were killed and 5 were injured. In view of the prevailing law and order situation, the Manipur government had suspended internet and mobile data services in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur districts for 3 days.
