Former President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Inderjit Singh Bindra died in New Delhi on Sunday. He was 84 years old.
Bindra was the President of BCCI from 1993 to 1996. Apart from this, he held the charge of Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) from 1978 to 2014. In 2015, the PCA Stadium in Mohali was renamed IS Bindra Stadium.
Bindra is remembered for playing an important role in organizing the 1987 Cricket World Cup. At that time it was called Reliance Cup. This was the first time that the Cricket World Cup was held outside England in India. Earlier, the World Cups of 1975, 1979 and 1983 were held in England only.
His contribution in the field of cricket broadcasting is also considered important. In 1994, he had approached the Supreme Court challenging the monopoly system of Doordarshan. After the court’s decision, international broadcasting companies like ESPN and TWI entered the Indian market, which rapidly changed the commercial nature of cricket.
After retiring from cricket administration in 2014, Bindra also took charge in the International Cricket Council (ICC). He was the Principal Advisor of ICC when Sharad Pawar was the President.
However, there were controversies in his career. He faced criticism for his support to Lalit Modi in the IPL spot-fixing case and the appointment of CEO of Cricket South Africa.
