The situation in Bangladesh is tense. Minorities have been attacked after Sheikh Hasina left the country. Due to this, a large number of people are trying to cross the border and enter India. On Thursday, the BSF stopped hundreds of Bangladeshi citizens from crossing the border.
According to BSF, in view of the large scale migration of people from Bangladesh, a ‘high alert’ has been issued in all units along the 4,096 km long Indo-Bangladesh border from Monday.
Bhaskar reporters took stock of the current situation in the five states bordering Bangladesh – West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Mizoram and Manipur.
West Bengal: Villages on the border, people are not able to give shelter even to their relatives
Bhaskar reporter reached Fulbari-Haldibari village of Jalpaiguri, adjacent to Bangladesh border. This village is divided in half between India and Bangladesh. This is the busiest area for movement of people from Bangladesh to India. But, right now only trucks are coming and going.
Haldibari villager Paresh Rai said that many of his relatives are seeking shelter since the violence, but BSF jawans are posted every 50 meters. They are not letting anyone in. Every day 25-50 Bangladeshis come to the village and call out, but run away as soon as the jawans challenge them.
The Mahananda river is the border here. There is no fence in 109 km of it. People are trying to infiltrate from here. On Wednesday also 200 people had gathered in front. They kept pleading with the soldiers, but they were not allowed entry. BSF is deployed up to 1.5 km inside.
Meghalaya: No one is allowed to come within four km
Bhaskar reporter reached Dawki Maitri Gate, 118 km away from Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. 12-13 BSF jawans are deployed here. Asia’s cleanest river Umangot flows here. In front is Bangladesh’s Tamabil village.
Dawki Maitri Gate falls in that 80 km area of the 443 km long international border of the state with Bangladesh, where there is no fence. Panchayat head of Dawki, Mankhar Singsai, said that the border is open at many places in the 4 km area. Earlier, 300-400 people used to come and go every day. Now there is silence.
Local Rai Cooper Sinren said that infiltration has completely stopped for the last three days. According to BSF IG Harbaksh Singh Dhillon in Meghalaya, Bangladeshis gathering on the other side of the river in this area are being alerted by explaining them.

Mizoram: Border sealed for two months, entry of refugees also banned
The border of Langtalai, 273 km from the capital Aizawl, is deserted. The state government has stopped the movement of everyone within a radius of 3 km from the border from 6 pm to 6 am. This order is for the next two months. Even after 7 pm, no one is allowed to come to the border or go towards Bangladesh.
Langtalai is connected to Bandarban and Rangamai of Chittagong in the hilly district of Bangladesh. Therefore, the possibility of infiltration from the hills always remains. Camps for refugees have also been built here. Langtalai’s Vongjong Shifui told that 54 people came from Bangladesh in May. They have been stopped in the camps, but there is no movement on the border right now.

Tripura: Three layer security, papers are strong, only then entry, hence silence
There are 8 entry points for Bangladeshis in Tripura. Bhaskar reporter reached Akhaura Integrated Check Post of Agartala. He told that if anyone wants to come to India from Bangladesh, then they are easily getting entry from here by showing the documents.
Integrated Check Post Manager Debashish Nandi said that the number of people coming from Bangladesh has reduced drastically. Now barely 70-80 people are coming. Only those with medical visas are getting entry. Scanning and document checking has been made strict. BSF and immigration officers are checking in three phases.
Assam: Cow and drug smuggling stopped for four days
Bhaskar reporter reached Nathanpur border post in Cachar, Assam. Barak river flows close to it. In front is Raghurchok village of Bangladesh. BSF has deployed surveillance boats in the river, which are covering 128 km.
No one is allowed to come within two km radius of the village. Local Gopesh Barman said that this area is notorious for cow and drug smuggling, but due to increased strictness, smuggling has stopped. People do come from Bangladesh, but return after hearing the announcements of the surveillance boats running in the river.
Bangladesh has a 268 km border with Assam where night curfew has been imposed. There is a high alert in Karimganj, Cachar, Dhubri and South Shalmara, Mankachar.
