India will host an important meeting of foreign ministers of Quad countries in New Delhi today. Lowy Institute’s India Chair Shruti Pandalai said the meeting will signal the Quad’s continued relevance despite the changing US-China equations. Quad summit was to be held in India in 2025. Tension has increased within the Quad in recent times. In 2024, the then US President Joe Biden hosted the meeting of Quad leaders in Delaware. After this, the next meeting was to be held in India in 2025, but it could not be held. According to the report, a major reason for this was the increased tension between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump imposed tariffs and additional duties on Indian goods, which strained relations between the two countries. Apart from this, Trump also claimed that he had mediated to calm the border conflict between India and Pakistan. India always considers such claims as sensitive. Trump had also criticized India’s purchase of arms from Russia. Due to all these reasons, uneasiness increased in the relations between New Delhi and Washington. Now US Foreign Minister Marco Rubio has come to India and has been given the responsibility of handling the relations between the two countries. According to the report, this will not be an easy task for him, because Trump’s focus is currently on West Asia and other global crises. The American government could not understand the importance of India. According to the German website DW, America, Japan and Australia were already security allies, but the real purpose of the Quad was to unite India so that the influence of the group increases. But the American government could not fully understand the importance of India, which has angered the Modi government. Japan and Australia are constantly trying to prevent the Quad from breaking. Some experts believe that Rubio’s arrival in India instead of Trump may be better for the Quad. US expert Derek Grossman warned that if Trump does not attend the next Quad leaders’ conference, the group may gradually lose importance. The next leaders’ meeting is likely to be held in Australia in late 2026.
