Demand for more representation was also raised from African countries. Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio said the UNSC still reflects the world of 1945. He said that Africa, with a population of more than 1.6 billion, does not have a permanent seat in the Council.
How does UNSC work?
There are total 15 members in UNSC. Among these, China, France, Russia, Britain and America are permanent members. These five have the right to veto. The remaining 10 members are elected for two years. To increase the number of permanent members in the UNSC, changes will have to be made in the UN Charter. For this, approval of two-thirds member countries along with two-thirds majority in the General Assembly is necessary. This also includes the approval of the five existing permanent members.
