World champion D Gukesh has been out of the ongoing FIDE Chess World Cup in Goa. They were playing in front of the home crowd for the first time after winning the World Championship last year. 19-year-old Gukesh was defeated by Germany’s Grand Master Frederick Swann by 0.5-1.5. After losing the match, Gukesh shook hands with Swann and got up and left.

Apart from Gukesh, Indian grandmasters P. Harikrishna and V. Pranav have made it to the round of 32. In the second round, Harikrishna defeated Daniel Dardha of Belgium by 1.5-0.5 and V. Pranav defeated Titas Stremavicius of Lithuania by 1.5-0.5.

Performance of other Indian players

  • Harikrishna looked in great form. He won the first game, after which Dardha could not do much even with the white pieces. The defeat of the first game proved to be decisive for them.
  • After winning the first game with white pieces, Pranav drew the second game with black pieces. Stremavicius tried his best to take the lead, but Pranav showed composure and drew the match in the endgame of rooks and pawns.
  • Diptayan Ghosh drew the first game against Gabriel Sargissian of Armenia with white pieces, but lost the second game. Diptayan had defeated Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia in the previous round.

Erigaysi and Praggnananda also reached round-32 Two more top players of India are Arjun Erigaisi and R. Praggnananda also reached the round-of-32. Arjun defeated Uzbekistan’s Shamsiddin Vokhidov, while Praggnananda defeated Armenia’s Robert Hovhannisyan. A draw was enough for Arjun to reach the next round, while Praggnananda registered a spectacular win.
