She did well in studies, but was more interested in sports, social activities and extracurricular activities. From a young age, Teeba started trying to create her own identity. But Teeba’s father always wanted her to stay at home and focus more on studies. In 2017, Teeba went to Türkiye with her family for further studies. There he started a new life and felt free. Although her family decided to return to Iraq, Tiba preferred to live in Turkey. He decided to pursue his studies and life there. Since childhood, Teeba had decided that she would create her own identity. With this thinking he entered the world of social media. First of all, she created her own YouTube channel, where she started sharing things related to makeup, fitness, fashion and her personal life. But as soon as her father came to know about this, fights started happening regularly between father and daughter. Teeba’s father wanted to impose restrictions on her, due to this fear Teeba never went to meet the Iraqi family. However, gradually Teeba’s followers started increasing on social media and people started liking her videos a lot. His personality, open thoughts and self-reliant style made him special in the world of social media. His popularity spread beyond Iraq to Türkiye and other countries. Teeba not only started showing her personal life but also expressed her views on the issues of women’s freedom and independence in the society. She had said in one of her vlogs that she had come to Türkiye to study but she liked the life here so much that she started living here. During this time, Tiba met Muhammad al-Shami, who was of Syrian origin. Friendship gradually turned into love and both decided to get married. While living in Türkiye, both of them started showing their life together through vlogs and social media. This independence of Tiba and her relationship with Muhammad al-Shami was never acceptable to her father, which later led to a dreadful outcome. He did not want both of them to live together and get married. But Tiba decided to marry Muhammad al-Shami. Meanwhile, in January 2023, Tiba returned to Iraq to support her national football team in the 25th Arabian Gulf Cup. When Tiba returned to Iraq, she began receiving death threats from her tribe. He contacted the police for his safety. Somehow she hid somewhere. Only her mother knew where Teeba was staying. There were constant conversations between mother and daughter. Mother missed Teeba very much and also wanted to meet her. Eventually Teeba agreed to meet her mother at a friend’s house, but she clearly said that she would never go to her father’s house. This decision later proved to be the biggest mistake of his life, because as soon as his mother reached that place, suddenly the whole family came there. Tiba was kidnapped and taken to al-Diwaniya in southern Iraq, where his family and his tribe lived. There was a heated argument between Teeba and his father, which soon turned into a scuffle. During the debate, Teeba alleged that in 2015, when she was just 15 years old, her brother raped her and her father did not even make any effort to save her. It was because of this fear that she did not want to return to Iraq after going to Turkey with her family, because she felt that the exploitation would continue and her father would again ignore her. Tiba had also told this to her mother before going to Türkiye, but due to lack of women’s rights in Iraq, her mother could not do anything. Almost everyone, especially her father, told Teeba to ignore it. Whereas the father, instead of understanding his daughter, blamed her and said that her relationship with a man and flaunting it on social media brought shame to the family as well as their entire tribe. It is said that during this time, the family gave Teeba something to drink, as soon as she drank it, Teeba fell asleep and then on January 31, 2023, her father strangled her to death. As soon as the news of the murder of a young YouTube star spread in Iraq, demonstrations began in every possible way. Within no time, protesters in Iraq started demanding justice against Tiba’s murder. On the other hand, women’s rights activists also protested against the murder of Tiba and the laws that permit violence against women. On 3 February, the United Nations mission condemned the killing and called on the Government of Iraq to criminalize gender-based violence. Amnesty International also strongly condemned the killing. Pressure was being put on the police to reveal the matter as soon as possible as to why and who murdered Teeba. It is also said that the family dispute was going on since 2015. There was an agreement earlier between the police and the family, due to which the police was going to go and resolve the dispute. But during this time the police were surprised when the father himself came to the police station and confessed that it was he who had murdered his daughter. Teeba’s father Tayyab Ali told the police that his daughter had brought shame to the family. He had no remorse for killing his daughter and said that yes – I had killed his daughter. Taiba al-Ali’s father, Tayyab Ali, was sentenced to life in prison for his daughter’s murder.
