Burnham came into politics after watching TV serials
Burnham was born in Liverpool in 1970, but spent her childhood in the village of Culcheth in Cheshire. His father was an engineer in the telecom company BT, while his mother was a receptionist in a clinic. Both were supporters of the Labor Party.
Andy Burnham’s decision to enter politics was not inspired by a speech by a politician, but by watching a TV drama.
He has told that at the age of 14, after watching BBC’s famous serial Boys from the Blackstuff, he decided to join the Labor Party. This drama was based on the story of unemployment and economic crisis in Liverpool.
Irish-born Burnham’s identity is not limited to politics only. He is a big fan of Everton Football Club of Liverpool.

Fell in love with Marie of the Netherlands while studying at Cambridge
Andy Burnham studied English Literature from Cambridge University, but the environment there was not easy for him. In his book ‘Head North’ he has written that at times he felt that he did not belong there and felt like an ‘outsider’.
His interest in music increased during his studies. The songs of Manchester’s indie bands – The Smiths and The Stone Roses greatly influenced his thinking and personality. According to Burnham, this music culture gave him his distinct identity.
Andy Burnham’s love story started from Cambridge University. It was here that he met Netherlands-born Marie-France van Heel. The two came closer while studying English Literature and got married several years later in 2000. Today he has three children.
Burnham told The Guardian in an interview in 2009 that initially he was not planning to raise a family. He believed that it is important to achieve stability first in life.

Became MP for the first time at the age of 31
Andy Burnham started his career not in politics, but in journalism. After graduation, he worked in magazines like Tank World and Passenger World Management. At the age of 20, he got his first chance in politics when he became a researcher for Labor MP Tessa Jowell.
After this, Burnham rapidly made his mark in politics. He was an advisor to Culture Minister Chris Smith and was first elected MP for the Leigh seat of Greater Manchester in 2001. After reaching Parliament, Burnham worked as a junior minister in the Tony Blair government.
During Gordon Brown’s tenure, his stature increased further and he got a place in the cabinet. During this period, he took charge of important ministries like finance, culture and health.

Lost Labor Party elections twice, still did not give up claim
Following Labor’s election defeat in 2010, Andy Burnham tried to become party leader for the first time, but came fourth out of five candidates. The command of the party passed into the hands of Ed Miliband.
Five years later, in 2015, Burnham tried his luck a second time. This time he was defeated by Jeremy Corbyn. Despite two consecutive defeats, he continued to work on strengthening his hold among the party’s grassroots workers and supporters.
Critics have often accused Burnham of changing political stances. However, he remained consistently in favor of the European Union on the issue of Brexit. In the 2016 referendum he supported Britain remaining in the EU. He later said that he wanted to see Britain rejoin the European Union during his lifetime.

When he clashed with the government, he got the name ‘King of the North’
Andy Burnham began a new innings in 2017 after twice missing out on becoming leader of the Labor Party. He left national politics to contest the election for the first directly elected mayor of Greater Manchester and won with more than 60% of the votes. In 2021, he won again by a larger margin.
During the Covid pandemic, Burnham openly spoke out against the central government, accusing it of discrimination against Northern England. At that time, his confrontation with the power of London gave him national recognition and the media started calling him ‘King of the North’.
Raised questions on his own party’s government
Even after the formation of Starmer’s government, Burnham did not maintain silence. He raised questions on the government’s economic policies related to expenditure and debt, due to which voices started being raised against him within the party.
However, by 2025, he was being seen as the next big face and potential leader of the Labor Party. When Greater Manchester MP Andrew Gwynn announced he was leaving the seat in January 2026, talk of Burnham’s return to Westminster intensified. But the party did not make him a candidate in the by-election. It was believed that this decision was taken with the consent of the Prime Minister and Labor leader Keir Starmer.
Party’s defeat raises questions on Starmer
The Labor Party performed worse than expected in the May 2026 elections in England, Scotland and Wales. At the same time, Nigel Farage’s Reform UK strengthened rapidly. He also made gains in areas that were considered Andy Burnham’s strongholds.
After the poor results, questions began to be raised on Keir Starmer’s leadership. Some MPs demanded change of leadership, while a round of resignations also started in the government and the party.
Meanwhile, Labor MP Josh Symons announced that he would give up the Makerfield seat so that Burnham could return to Parliament. The party nominated him and he won the by-election the following month and returned to Westminster.
This victory was seen not only as his parliamentary comeback, but also as his entry into the race to become the next leader of the Labor Party. In fact, to become a party leader, it is necessary to be an MP and Burnham had fulfilled this condition.
Speaking the language of common people is Burnham’s biggest strength.
According to Robert Ford, Professor of Politics at Manchester University, Andy Burnham’s biggest strength is that he explains even difficult and technical issues in the language of common people.
Ford says that Burnham is not only a good speaker but also an excellent storyteller. He easily makes people understand for whom he is doing politics and what he wants to achieve.
According to the professor, this is what makes him different from many other Labor leaders and current Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Where Starmer’s politics are often seen as technical and administrative, Burnham appears to be more successful in creating an emotional connection with ordinary voters.
For this reason, many people within the Labor Party consider him to be a leader who can stop the declining popularity of the party and generate new enthusiasm among its supporters.
