A Hindu singer jailed in Bangladesh died due to lack of adequate treatment. The deceased has been identified as Prolay Chaki. The family has alleged that he did not receive timely and adequate treatment while in jail.
Chaki died at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital at around 9 pm on Sunday night (January 11). He was lodged in Pabna district jail and was admitted to the hospital on Friday after his health deteriorated.
According to the jail administration, Prolay Chaki suffered a heart attack on Friday morning. After this, he was first taken to Pabna General Hospital and later referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital for better treatment, where he died on Sunday night.

Prolay Chaki was admitted to the Medical College Hospital in Rajshahi.
Officials said – there was no delay in treatment
Pabna District Jail Superintendent Mohammad Omar Farooq said that Prolay Chaki was already suffering from many diseases including diabetes. According to him, the treatment process was started as soon as his health deteriorated and there was no delay.
The deceased’s son and music director Sani Chaki has rejected the claims of the jail administration. He says that his father had diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and serious eye problems, yet he was not given proper treatment in jail.
Sani Chaki alleges that when her father was taken to Pabna General Hospital, there were no facilities for treatment related to heart disease. Despite this, he was kept there, then sent back to jail and later taken to Rajshahi, due to which his condition worsened.
Prolay was associated with Awami League
Prolay Chaki was the district level cultural secretary of the Awami League of Bangladesh. He was arrested from his home on 16 December 2025.
According to jail sources, the main reason for his arrest was his association with Awami League. Awami League is currently banned in Bangladesh.
According to human rights organization Ain O Salish Centre, a total of 107 people died in Bangladesh’s prisons in 2025, including 69 undertrials and 38 convicted prisoners. The number of custodial deaths in 2024 was recorded at 65.
