1931
The day of delivery of Prithviraj Kapoor’s wife Ram Sarani Mehra was approaching. Earlier in 1924, she gave birth to her first son Raj Kapoor. A midwife was called to the house for delivery. When she gave birth to her second child, Bindi, the next year, she died a week after birth. The same thing happened a year later at the birth of the third child, Devi. After the death of two children, when the days of the fourth delivery started approaching, Prithviraj Kapoor clearly said that now the delivery will not take place at home but in the hospital.
On 21 October 1931, when Ram Sarani Mehra suffered labor pain, the entire family reached the hospital. She gave birth to a son, who was named Shamsher Raj Kapoor.
Father Prithviraj had achieved a big position in Hindi cinema, elder brother Raj Kapoor also achieved the title of showman with his skill, in such a situation Shamsher i.e. Shammi Kapoor had a big challenge to do something different. But soon Shammi Kapoor made such a name for himself with his talent that he came to be called the Elvis Presley of India. He was so attached to his family that he even sacrificed his love for Mumtaz for his father’s principles. However, a few months before his death, he expressed his desire to meet Mumtaz to his wife and she also arranged for this meeting.
Today, on the occasion of his birth anniversary, know some stories related to his life, which help in understanding his personality-
Story-1
Prithviraj Kapoor fought with the principal when the school did not allow him to play.
Born in Bombay, Shammi Kapoor was a few years old when his father Prithviraj Kapoor moved to Kolkata with the entire family. He used to run the New Theater Studio in Kolkata and also worked in films. Shammi Kapoor had his early education from Kolkata itself.

In 1944, Prithviraj Kapoor came to Bombay and started Prithvi Theatre. Raj Kapoor and Shammi Kapoor would also take part in theater plays. Shammi Kapoor became Bharat in the theater play Shakuntala. Prithviraj wanted Shammi to rehearse it well, but he was not allowed to take leave from school again and again. In such a situation, Prithviraj Kapoor himself went to school and got into a fight after the principal’s refusal. Even then things did not work out so Shammi Kapoor’s school was changed.
Story-2
Brother publicly asked for a kiss from Raj Kapoor’s girlfriend
During his teenage days, Shammi Kapoor used to visit the sets of his father and elder brother Raj Kapoor’s films. One day he reached the set of the film Barsaat. Raj Kapoor and Nargis grew close on the sets of this film. Shammi Kapoor was around 15-16 years old then. When he went to meet Nargis in her make-up room, she was sitting there sad.
When Shammi Kapoor asked the reason, he got the answer- ‘I want to be made a heroine in Raj Saheb’s next film Awara.’
Shammi quickly said- ‘I will go and talk to brother.’
Nargis interrupted and said- ‘No, the problem is not with Raj Saheb. They also want the same, but my family does not want me to work with Raj Saheb.
Actually, the discussion about the closeness of Nargis and Raj Kapoor was spreading, but Nargis’s family had objections to it. Raj Kapoor was already married to Krishna Kapoor and had children.

Raj Kapoor and Nargis had done many hit films together like Aag, Andaz, Barsaat.
Shammi Kapoor again asked- ‘What objection does your family have?’
Got the answer- ‘Mehboob Sahab (director, who made Andaaz with Raj Kapoor-Nargis) considers me a daughter, he also clearly said that I should not stray. You pray that I become a heroine in the film.
This time Shammi Kapoor said in a mischievous manner- ‘And what do I get?’
Nargis said laughingly- ‘If I become a heroine, I will give you a sweet kiss.’
It took several months to make the film Barsaat. And with time this promise faded from the minds of both Nargis and Shammi Kapoor. In 1949, the film Barsaat was released and then after several months the film Awara started. It was to be directed by Mehboob Khan, who did not want to cast Nargis. Also he wanted its heroes to be Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar. Raj Kapoor refused to listen to him and decided to become a hero himself and direct the film. When Raj Kapoor became the producer-director, Nargis was made the heroine in Awara.

The shooting of the film started in RK Studio. Shammi Kapoor reached the set one day. Suddenly he remembered the promise made to Nargis 4 years ago.
During the shooting break, Shammi Kapoor openly reminded Nargis of his promise and said- ‘You remember what you promised me? You had said that if you become the heroine of Awara, you will give me a kiss.
Nargis laughed shyly and hid behind the camera. He had made the promise to Shammi Kapoor, who looked like a 16-year-old child, but now he was a young man.
Everyone was laughing, then Shammi Kapoor again said- ‘He had promised, he has to keep it.’
Raj Kapoor was standing nearby, he said- ‘It is a fact.’
Nargis blushed at this and said- ‘Things were different then, he was a child then.’
Shammi Kapoor said on this- ‘Something has to give.’
Nargis asked again- ‘Okay, tell me what do you want?’
Got the answer- ‘I want a gramophone.’
Having a gramophone was a big thing then. There were only a few shops in the country and only a few rich people owned it.
Nargis immediately called the driver and herself went along and got Shammi Kapoor a gramophone and many recordings. Since then Shammi Kapoor became interested in western music. This story was told to Dainik Bhaskar by Rumi Jaffrey, who was close to Shammi Kapoor.
