President Draupadi Murmu addressed the 9th International Santhal Conference in West Bengal.
President Draupadi Murmu on Saturday expressed displeasure over the change of venue of the program in Bengal. He said- I think the Bengal government does not want the welfare of the tribals. Mamta Banerjee is like my younger sister. I am also a daughter of Bengal.
The President said…

Neither the Chief Minister nor any Minister of State came to receive him during his North Bengal tour. I don’t know whether Mamata is angry with me or not. Well, it doesn’t matter. May you all be well.

On changing the venue of the programme, he said that it would have been better if the program was held in Bidhannagar. There is plenty of space and a lot of people could come. But I don’t know why the state administration did not allow the meeting there.
Actually, the President had reached West Bengal to attend the 9th International Santhal Conference. During this time he expressed his displeasure about the small venue. He said that the ground fixed in Phansidewa was very small, due to which many people could not attend the program.

What else did President Murmu say…
- It would have been better if the program was held in Bidhannagar, because there was more space there and more people could have come. Due to small space in Goshaipur, many people could not come to the program.
- The program was organized at a place where it was difficult for people to reach. It seems that people from the tribal community were stopped from attending the programme.
- It seemed as if some people did not want this international conference to take place. Perhaps some people do not want the Santhal community to progress and become stronger.
Know the whole matter…
President Draupadi Murmu was invited to the program organized every year by the tribal community. It was actually going to happen in Bidhannagar, Siliguri. However, citing security and other logistical reasons, officials shifted the location to Gopalpur near Bagdogra Airport.
When the President reached the venue on Saturday afternoon, only a few people were present. Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb was the only representative to receive him at the airport. According to protocol, usually the Chief Minister or a state government minister is present to receive the President.
President appealed to Santhal youth to save language and tradition
President Draupadi Murmu said in the program that the contribution of the Santhal community in India’s freedom struggle has not been properly recognized. He said that many great personalities were deliberately not included in history. He appealed to the youth to embrace education and save language and traditions.
He said that it is a matter of pride for the Santal community that our ancestor, Tilka Manjhi, raised the flag of rebellion against exploitation about 240 years ago. Nearly 60 years after their rebellion, the brave brothers Siddho-Kanhu and Chand-Bhairav along with the brave sisters Phulo-Jhano led the Santal Hul in 1855.
Murmu said, “But I know how much the Santhals have contributed to the country. Baba Tilka Manjhi, Sido-Kanhu and Chand-Bhairav, there are many more whose names are not in history. I think, if their names were included, the entire history would have been filled with their names.

What else did Murmu say in the program…
- The President remembered Pandit Raghunath Murmu, the inventor of the Ol Chiki script. Said that this script created in 1925 gave a new identity to Santali language and literature. Raghunath Murmu worked to spread literature and awareness in the society by writing many plays.
- Stick to your language, but learn other languages too. Tribal youth should focus on education and skill development. The tribal community has preserved folk music, dance and traditions for centuries.
- Tribal communities including Santhal will become an example of maintaining the balance of progress and nature conservation. Education should be given priority while preserving language and culture. Maintaining unity and brotherhood in the society will create a strong India.
